Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has lashed out at Israel again, saying its possession of nuclear weapons makes it a threat to the region and accusing the Jewish state of implementing “state terrorism.”
“I see Israel as a threat to its region because it has nuclear weapons. In addition, Israel is an occupying force and implements state terrorism in the region,” Erdoğan said at a conference on Turkish foreign policy in Pretoria, South Africa. When reminded by a participant that Israel has come under attack from Gaza and that a UN panel recently concluded that the Israeli blockade of Gaza is legal, Erdoğan said Israeli bombs killed tens of thousands in Gaza.
Responding to the participant’s suggestion that weapons and rockets are being smuggled from Egypt to Gaza through a series of tunnels in southern Gaza, Erdoğan said: “Atomic bombs and phosphorus bombs cannot be smuggled through Gaza tunnels. Israel, on the other hand, has bombed Gaza with phosphorus bombs. It is a weapon of mass destruction and it is a crime to use weapons of mass destruction. Small weapons, maybe rifles could be smuggled through these tunnels but tanks cannot, right? But Gaza was besieged by tanks while it was also attacked with phosphorus bombs.”
Erdoğan also said Israel has nuclear weapons while Iran “is attacked by everyone” because it has a nuclear program. “What kind of justice is this?” he asked.
The Turkish prime minister said Israel has condemned itself to isolation because of the way it treats Palestinians. “Palestinians, not Israel, are the owner of these lands. You can live in peace in South Africa right now, but Palestinians do not have this kind of peace in their lands,” he said.
Turkey expelled the Israeli ambassador and other senior diplomats and suspended military agreements after the report of a UN panel set up to investigate a May 31, 2010 Israeli takeover of a Turkish-owned aid ship trying to break the blockade of Gaza, which resulted in the killing of eight Turks and a Turkish-American teenager, was leaked. Turkey demanded an apology but Israel refused, saying its soldiers acted in self-defense.
Erdoğan said a total of 35 bullets were fired at the nine dead. “The prime minister of Israel can shamelessly claim that there were weapons on the ship. So far, they have been unable to display a single weapon. But he can speak this lie because their politics are based on lies, not honesty.”
Erdoğan also questioned the US inaction regarding the May 31 raid, reiterating that the 19-year-old American citizen who was killed on the ship was shot at close range and that he was shot five times. “I have explained this to US officials, including President Barack Obama. But there has been no answer. Are you not protecting the rights of your own citizen because he is of Turkish origin?” Erdoğan asked.
The prime minister said it was time for the international community to tell Israel that it cannot act as it pleases. “It is impossible to accept this understanding of administration that is based on oppression. It is time to put an end to this. The international community must tell Israel that it is not above the law,” Erdoğan said.
Erdoğan has recently criticized the structure of the UN Security Council, saying its five permanent members have too much authority in deciding on matters of world politics. He reiterated this criticism in South Africa and said none of the decisions passed by the UN against Israel could ever be implemented while countries such as Sudan and Iran do face sanctions under UN resolutions.
Erdoğan also called for a reform at the UN. “The structure of permanent membership and non-permanent memberships must change,” he said, suggesting that the privileges of permanent membership must be available to all countries.
“Is there any African country among the permanent members? No. How, then, will justice be served? Right now, the fate of the whole African continent is in the hands of the five permanent members,” he said.
