ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday said fast-paced economic activity has started across the country and people are going to witness a revolutionary change in the years ahead.

Speaking at the launch of a modern ‘Green Line Train’ service that will chug between Islamabad and Karachi, he said it is a sign that the Pakistan Railways has turned around into an income generating organisation.

The prime minister also unveiled a plaque to launch the train that will cover the distance between Islamabad and Karachi in 23 hours and provide a number of facilities, including comfortable sleepers, WiFi, free meals and newspapers.

He noted that the railways was no more a lossmaking entity and had started generating income, adding that the organisation was creating history by launching a new service. “The railways generated Rs18 billion in 2012-13 and Rs23 billion in 2013-14. In the current year, it is likely to earn Rs28 billion which may go up to Rs31 billion,” he added.

The prime minister also appreciated railways workers, who, he said, made it a success. “Though a lot has been done, still there is much room for improvement,” he said.

Nawaz said the Green Line Train should be treated as an experimental project, adding that more such projects needed to be undertaken to make cheap, fast rail travel a reality.

He appreciated the fact that all passengers of the new train service would be insured to the tune of Rs1 million and hoped the organisation would continue to come up with more facilities for its passengers.

The prime minister expressed the hope that the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor would benefit from improvement in the Pakistan Railways, which would have a service from Kashgar to Karachi. “The time is not far when the Pakistan Railways will have a train service to Turkey,” he added.

He also lauded the services of Minister for Railways Khawaja Saad Rafique for turning around the organisation, which according to him, was on the brink of collapse. He also praised him for recovering over 3,000 acres of railways property worth Rs10 billion from the land mafia.

Khawaja Saad Rafique, in his speech, highlighted the success story of the organisation and said he was looking forward to making the railways a modern service. “In a major improvement the railways now has a stock of fuel for at least 2-3 weeks and measures are afoot to improve it further,” he said.

The minister regretted the trend of politics of agitation in the country and said no sit-ins, protests and baseless accusations could deter the current leadership of the country from embarking on development projects.

Information Minister Pervaiz Rashid, Science and Technology Minister Anusha Rehman, State Minister for Petroleum Jam Kamal Khan, parliamentarians and the PR officials were also present at the ceremony.

I don't think this project is feasible and most likely turn out to be another failed project of the government. In my opinion it is the revival of business express train service inaugurated by Yousuf Raza Gillani back in 2012.

PM inaugurates first business express train - Pakistan - DAWN.COM

I think this project will fail due to the following reasons:
  • As I talked about the fare of this service being too high couple of days ago
  • The distance of approximately 1500 kilometres in 23 hours is a long journey
  • We cannot afford bullet trains but can upgrade the whole section of Karachi-Islamabad for minimum speed of 140km/hr (the maximum speed currently available in the country) and reducing the journey to less than 12 hours.
  • The travel distance of this train service should have been at least 35% quicker than alternatives available in the country
  • We already have a train service doing similar purpose, I believe that is cheaper but not as luxury
  • Most people in Pakistan are money-striped so they would look around for cheaper options available and not fall for the trap of free meal and wifi service when they can save a lot more by using the regular services available
I think it is not a very regular service. We should be running such trains for at least 3 times per hour and if the people were really moving towards the railway, the load of 200 trains per day would not have been enough.

PS: I am up for any development project in Pakistan and if it does turn out to be a success somehow, I will be standing amongst the happiest Pakistanis. So I do hope my observation is incorrect

Our Government is so nice that when my plane was struck by lightening and diverted to New Delhi couple of months ago. We were stranded at Delhi Airport for about 40 hours. We tried to contact the Government of Pakistan and one of the guy managed to send an email to NDTV (as far as I heard). After receiving a reply from them we were told that our embassy will be in touch with us soon. But only to know that Prime Minister took notice of this incident and instructed to send a chartered PIA plane for us. The baba jee's of the flight were like "Mian Sahab ne kamaal kar diya ab bas plane aaya aur hum gaye"... We were there for another 24 hours or so and not even a single government official came to say "Hello", let alone the flight or consulate service provided by the government of Pakistan. Nobody was there to say sir we are with you and don't ask me about the condition of people over there as they were stranded in alien land in their point of view.

I was getting frustrated as I had not slept for about 60 hours and had very few days to spend in Pakistan so I alongside two other passengers started gathering people and asked them to protest so these people can fasten the pace of engineering work or provide us with alternative plane and finally we got the things under control within 3-4 hours when the head of Gulf Air, India came to us, apologised and took serious actions to sort this matter out.

When we reached Pakistan, there was a government officer who came to me saying oh sir jee, I know you have gone through a lot of stress in India and we could not do anything for you but I am told that you spoke well in India and the media wants to talk to you alongside few other passengers so please do not say anything bad to the government as the country is currently not in position to face further embarrassment before the world... long lecture of patriotism was conferred and I said to him if you want me to comment on the treatment of GoP then I have really worst things to say but you want me to speak nice for country's sake so I would abstain from opening my mouth and revealing reality. After I reached home, whomsoever I met, many people praising Nawaz Sharif government for the credit they hardly deserved and I made sure they all know the reality.

PML-N is just a publicity party, for any project if they don't see publicity, they would not set their feet in.
