LAHORE: While the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) persevere in their demand for the resignation of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, the Sharif brothers decided on Sunday that neither of them would step down at any cost.

The decision was taken in a meeting between the Sharif brothers at the Jati Umra residence of the prime minister where they discussed the prevailing political crisis triggered by the PTI and PAT sit-ins in Islamabad and Nawaz’s meeting with PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari. Shahbaz’s son MNA Hamza Shahbaz was also in attendance.

According to sources in the PML-N, the elder Sharif has categorically told his party aides and other political parties that Shahbaz’s resignation is out of the question. The ruling party believes that Shahbaz cannot be removed, because he has been instrumental in the electoral victory of the PML-N. In their Sunday’s meeting, the Sharif brothers decided not to give in to any ‘extra-constitutional demands’ of the PAT and PTI at any cost.

In a related development, the Punjab chief minister’s spokesperson strongly contradicted media reports that Shahbaz Sharif has decided to resign. “The news items in this regard are baseless, concocted and misleading,” he said. “These mischievous news reports are based only on rumours.”

The prime minister and the chief minister also decided to resume their official work in order to dispel the impression that the government has become dysfunctional due to the ongoing protest sit-ins in the federal capital. The prime minister’s press secretary also confirmed that Nawaz will sit in his office from Monday and perform his official work as usual.

The Sharif brothers, according to sources, also discussed PAT chief Dr Tahirul Qadri’s demand for the registration of an FIR against 21 people, including the premier, the Punjab chief minister, the provincial police chief and Hamza Shahbaz, in the June 17 killings at Lahore’s Model Town. The information minister has challenged in the Lahore High Court (LHC) a decision of a Lahore sessions court that ordered the registration of the FIR against the nominated accused.

The Sharif brothers, however, offered Qadri that if he submits a fresh application excluding the names of the prime minister, chief minister and other senior officials, then it would be entertained by the Punjab government.

The Sharif brothers also decided to convey to Qadri if he was willing to accept a judicial commission of the Supreme Court to probe the Model Town tragedy. They also discussed that an inconclusive report of the judicial commission of the LHC should be presented before a high-level committee for its recommendations for final action.

Qadri had boycotted the commission’s proceedings and demanded registration of an FIR against 21 people. Sources said the Sharif brothers have finalised the makeup of the committee, headed by a retired judge, to fix responsibility in light of the commission report so that the Punjab government should take action.

So are these guys above the law? This is beyond a joke. How can any sane person defend these guys? We need a change and soon for Pakistan's sake.

Tell me how exactly were Nawaz Sharif or saad rafique or pervez rashid involved in the killing? FIR is not something that can be abused for political gains. It was obviously abused just to give the pmln leadership a hard time.

Qadri's speeches are ones that motivated the whole model town incident. Look up his speeches and youll know. Qadris goons fired the first shots and in return, the police fired.

They should NOT resign, on the basis that only 4-10 seats were rigged, accepted, responsibility on election commission of pakistan, and what about the hundreds of other seats fairly, justly and honestly fought? why punish the ministers, mpa, mna honestly elected on those seats...its like a mistake of few, IK and Qadri wants to punish the whole setup...

Time share government and rule policy. Zardari is worried about the next tenure which was supposed to be for Chicken Zardari. But current events are not in his favor and current government of coarse wants to compete the term and handover the next five years to Chicken Zardari as per the agreement.

Sorry no matter what, all elections in my view are rigged unless and until they implement biometric voting involving finger scanning and NADRA card.

So called non-democratic nations are way ahead in voting systems and methodology than so called democratic Pakistan where politicians want to save the so called democracy of time share and rule policy

PTI’s bizarre proposals of resignations

By Editorial
Updated about 7 hours ago

WHEN is a resignation not quite a resignation? It seems when it is demanded by the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf.

Determined to secure seemingly even a ‘non-resignation resignation’ to fulfil its original demand that Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif step down, the PTI has mooted a most peculiar set of ideas: the prime minister should, according to the PTI, resign for a short duration while the judicial commission completes its work, and thereafter resume office if the commission’s findings do not warrant fresh elections. In the annals of global political history, it would be difficult to find an example that would match the PTI’s extremely bizarre proposal.

For what, exactly, would Prime Minister Sharif’s temporary resignation achieve?

Consider that the very elections that the PTI is disputing were held under a caretaker government. Clearly then, even within the PTI’s scheme of things, if the PML-N was allegedly able to rig an election when not in office, could it not affect the outcome of a judicial inquiry when the party has governments at both the centre and in the principally electorally disputed province of Punjab? Is there a conspiracy to divide Punjab province ?

Or is the PTI arguing that it is Nawaz Sharif and he alone who is able and willing to distort elections and inquiries, and that with Mr Sharif temporarily on the side lines, the PML-N governments in the centre and in Punjab would miraculously become independent bodies that will discover the world the way the PTI sees it?

Or does the PTI secretly hope that nominating a stop-gap prime minister would bring in a national government of sorts through the back door, giving the party a say in who the temporary leader should be? The latest PTI suggestion is as ludicrous and off-putting as several that have come before it.

At this point, it is worth asking who is advising Imran Khan. Shah Mehmood Qureshi has taken a central role in the present crisis and has been both extremely visible and active. The former PPP foreign minister has forged a reputation of sorts of having political ambitions that perhaps do not quite match his political stature.

Is Mr Khan listening to the wrong man? Or is that wrong man Mr Khan himself?

That Mr Khan could in fact be on a solo flight, with his PTI colleagues struggling to keep up, is a possibility that was further reinforced on Friday as Mr Khan suggested that his quest for a so-called new and improved Pakistan was in part tied to his desire to get married again.

Allow that proposition to sink in for a moment. Thousands of people assembled outside parliament, a country held hostage to a political crisis, and Mr Khan has his mind on personal affairs and marriage, even if he attempted to qualify his remarks later. Is Imran Khan a serious politician a pop star or, sadly, just a pop-star politician?

LONDON- Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has said the parliament has played an important role in the current political crisis adding that the government would continue to function without any detraction.

Talking to journalists today PM vowed to bring reforms in the system in his five year term. He said the parliament has played an important role in the current political crisis. The entire parliament and the nation stands on the one side while handful elements stand isolated on the other.

He said the political leadership has demonstrated maturity in the prevailing situation and all the democratic institutions are working as per their mandate. The PM said ongoing protests had inflicted large damages on the economy. “We have not staged rallies so far. When we do, it will be known to public,” he said in an apparent retort to protesters, hinting at the public support PML-N enjoys.

He said he didn’t want to talk about those doing unconstructive politics. To another question, the prime minister said marchers were staging sit-ins in Islamabad, while the government is doing its work and the government will continue to function without any detraction.

He was of the view that the entire nation was standing on one side while a group of few people was on the other side.

About his remarks on Kashmir dispute at the UN General Assembly session, the Prime Minister said he represented the stance of Pakistan and aspirations of the Pakistani people. He said his government has a commitment on the resolution of this longstanding dispute.
