PM Modi expected to sign an agreement on Chabahar port in Iran today

Tehran: A historic deal to develop the Chabahar port in Iran, which will open up access to central Asia, was signed in Tehran on Monday after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Hassan Rouhani.
Here are the top 10 developments in this big story:
  1. "Chabahar can become very big symbol of cooperation between Iran and India," the Iran President said after the pact was signed. PM Modi said: "India and Iran are not new friends. Our dosti is as old as history."
  2. This is the first foreign port in which India is involved to this extent. The port in the Gulf of Oman on Iran's southern coast with Afghanistan will allow India to bypass Pakistan to transport goods to Afghanistan and central Asia using a sea-land route.
  3. Pakistan does not allow India to send goods through its territory to Afghanistan and has only recently begun to allow a trickle of Afghan exports to cross through to India.
  4. India will help develop the port and invest around $200 million to develop terminals and cargo berths at Chabahar. A 500-km railway line between Chabahar and Zahedan will also be built with Indian collaboration.
  5. India's move is also being seen as a balance to China's influence in Pakistan. India wants to develop the port as a counter to Pakistan's Gwadar port, which was built with Chinese assistance and is 72 km from Chabahar.
  6. PM Modi was given a ceremonial welcome this morning before his meeting with the Iran President, described by the foreign ministry as a "restricted tete-a-tete".
  7. PM Modi's visit -- the first by a Indian Prime Minister in 15 years -- comes four months after the sanctions on Iran were lifted and the international community is re-engaging with the nation.
  8. Connectivity, energy security and bilateral trade are on top of PM Modi's agenda. He will also inaugurate an Indian cultural festival in Iran.
  9. After arriving in Tehran last evening, the PM tweeted in Persian, "Reached Iran, a land with whom India shares civilisational ties. Hope to enhance economic partnership between our nations." On Sunday evening, PM Modi addressed the Indian community and visited a Gurdwara in Tehran.
  10. Before the visit, India has cleared part of its $6.4 billion oil dues to Iran.
 
Now India better hurries up !! I would have liked if there was some clause for penalties if project's completion date extended beyond certain date.
 
One more step towards enhancing busines and securing our neighbourhood through peaceful and progressive measures. It will go a long way to bring stability in the region by checkmating the nefarious designs of our enemies. The "String" is being broken and rendered useless!! :)

This is amazing... .. both Iran and India can benefit a lot with this partnership.. in fact happy for Afghanistan as well... we need to do more to help them grow .. and what can be better than a port that that can be used by Afghanistan.
 
A fools dream I would say because Chahbar is highly region and doest not connect any major consumer economy..compared with CPEC pakistan will earn 5 billion a year just from the Chinese crude transit...which means it can pay for itself in just under 10 Years.
1) highly doubt u will earn that much cause Chinese companies will own all the projects
2) After 10-15 yrs when cpec starts u r annual interest on loan will be 15+ bill
 
It is an useless comparison to compare with Gwadar and Chabahar port. Both ports will be used distinctively by different countries with specific limitations of their own. Chabahar may be benifitial to India as it does not have any better route to Central Asia. In the same way, Gwadar is best deal for China as it is the shortest route to China...But in a nutshell, the biggest benificiary are Iran and Pakistan .. The reason is simple....Iran and Pakistan can very well use both Gwadar and Chabahar without any investing any money in both the ports...So Pakistan should cheer up as more and more ports are opening up around its Southern Zone.
