BAREILLY: An RTI query has revealed that Prime MinisterNarendra Modidid not attend a singleIftar partyin 2014 and 2015. The RTI activist had also sought information on whether the PM has given greetings on the occasion of Eid but the reply to this is still awaited. As it's been nearly a year of wait, the RTI activist has filed an appeal with Central Information Commission (CIC).
Bareilly-based RTI activist and consumer affairs advocate Mohammed Khalid Jilani had filed an RTI, asking details of "Iftar party" programmes attended by the PM in 2014 and 2015. The RTI stated that PM did not attend a single Iftar party in these two years.
In the same RTI, the activist had sought information whether PM extended his greetings on the occasions of Eid-ul-Fitr, Eid ul-Adha or Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi.
The RTI sought from the prime minister's office (PMO) copies of greetings extended by Modi on these occasions.
"It has been nearly a year since I sought information from the PMO and replies are still awaited. It seems that the PM never offered greetings to citizens on these occasions and that is why they don't have any answers," said Jilani. "It is surprising that in his two years of tenure, PM never threw an Iftar party nor took part in it," he said.
Iftar parties, during the month of Ramazan, are a staple in the political circles and are closely watched. PM Modi has also been much-criticized for not hosting an Iftar party, which has been organized by former prime ministers, including Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the first BJP leader to hold the position.
Last year Modi skipped President Pranab Mukherjee's Iftar party. The PMO said Modi had a meeting with the chief ministers from the North-East. In 2014, shortly after coming to power, Modi and several senior ministers in the government had skipped the Iftar at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
The RTI queried about other religious festivals in which PM gave his greetings to countrymen and through which medium. The reply to this query too is still awaited. "After waiting for long, I have filed an appeal with CIC against it in March this year but it is still pending," said Jilani.
