Water Resource Minister Anisul Islam Mahmud has said the official agenda of the prime minister’s forthcoming visit to India was yet to be set.

He made the remark at a press conference held at the Sagor-Runi auditorium of Dhaka Reporters’ Unity on Sunday.

However, he mentioned that the Ganges Barrage Project and the sharing of Teesta water were the two main issues for Bangladesh which needed to be addressed.

“Currently, we are only able to irrigate 1,50,000 hectares of land using water from the Teesta,” said Anisul. He added that they still had not decided how much water each country would be allocated.

“India controls one fourth of the river, so we will need their assistance in the construction of the barrage,” he said.

“Once the Bangladesh-India Joint Technical Committee completes its survey, we will be able to proceed with construction.”

Since the two countries share 54 rivers, tensions regarding water diplomacy has always run high. In 1972, a joint river commission was set up to mediate these issues, but failed to do so.

What's the point...any discussion on this issue always gets hijacked by internal Indian politics. Especially now with non BJP controlled states trying their best to annoy PM Modi every step of the way

Block the river. There will be more land for bangldeshers to live on so hopefully they will stop come here in hoards.

@bluesky and his awami league masters are desperate to coverup empty promises with series of PURELY BS article with no sustenance.

Barrage construction on river Padma stalled for Delhi’s clearance

The construction of a US$ four billion barrage on the trans-boundary river Padma at Pangsha in Rajbari is now pending for ‘clearance’ from New Delhi.
Bangladesh (awami league govt) has sought India’s no-objection for implementing the Ganges Barrage Project, which would mainly check salinity intrusion and provide irrigation facility in the country’s south-western region.
‘The water resources ministry in a letter asked the foreign ministry a couple of weeks back to send a note verbale to the Indian government seeking no-objection for implementation of the US$ 4 billion Ganges Barrage Project as we have already shared details of the feasibility study with the Indian side,’ said an official concerned.

Sir @idune, you are a genius of invention. How come I am a pro-Indian League member? Please instead of scolding me here and there enlighten me about a possible Teesta water deal. Do not you think that Teesta will be on the agenda for discussion in the April India visit by the PM?
