Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday asked the senior army officials to consider professional efficiency, the spirit of the Liberation War, leadership, discipline, honesty, trust worthiness and loyalty as the criteria for promotion, reports UNB.

She made the directive while inaugurating the Army Headquarters Selection Board-2012 at the Officers' Mess (new) at the Army Headquarters at Dhaka Cantonment. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina formally inaugurated the five-day board in the morning.

Hasina said a disciplined and strong army can play a very supportive role in establishing and consolidating democracy of a country.

"So, leadership should be handed over to those who are well educated, able for work, aware and intelligent, and above all firmly committed to strengthening democracy," she said.
Hasina asked the army officials to find out new able leadership, who are patriotic and believe in
the spirit of great Liberation War, through neutral analysis.

Hasina told the senior most army officials that she has the full confidence in their prudence, judgment and righteous. "I hope that you'll be able to find out able leadership on the basis of principles and justice by keeping yourselves above personal liking and disliking," she said.
She mentioned that a strong, disciplined, well educated and professional army equipped with modern technology is the symbol of national independence and sovereignty.

"The Awami League government believes in development, expansion and modernisation of the army. That's why we always take effective steps to develop the armed forces," she said.
She described various steps taken by her government this time and her previous government.
Hasina said AL always runs the country as the servant not the ruler. To serve people, she mentioned, her government always got cooperation from them. "This is my firm belief that we'll get you beside people whenever needed," she said.

An ISPR release said a decision will be taken through the board for the promotion of the army officers from the rank of Colonel to Brigadier General and Lieutenant Colonel to Colonel.
"The board comprising officers of the highest policymaking level of the army would be given promotion to the efficient and skilled officers for future senior leadership of the Bangladesh Army," the release said.

Earlier, on her arrival at the Army Headquarters, the Prime Minister was received by her defence adviser Major General (retd) Tariq Ahmed Siddique, Chief of Army Staff General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan and Principal Staff Officer of the Armed Forces Division Lt Gen Abdul Wadud.
Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister Sheikh Md Wahid Uz Zaman, Defence Secretary Khondakar Md Asaduzzaman, Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad and high officials of the army were present on the occasion

Isn't this pretty much universal (except the liberation war effort)? I don't see anything news worthy here, it's just pointing out the obvious.

@ Not a single one fought the Liberation War of 1971 !!!!!!!
And all the fuzzes of 'The spirit of liberation war' were created 80s onward that correlated with RAWAMY's re-birth from 1975's ashes, Akmal Bhai. I still remember the RAWAMY drama of 'Babar Kalanka' at around the time of RAW's scheming of creating a brain washed generation. And the irony was that Geoblian, Straussian and McCarthian tactics became matured by that time. So, pounding on a good but foreign word like RAZAKAR took place non-stop and the outcome was evident after 3 decades as it became symbol of traitorousness. What a strange world that we live in!

How does one establish this or quantify this ? The guy above or below me talks more of the Liberation war so needs a faster promotion ?

What relevance does it have to a Military leader who is expected to prepare for the next war ?

Once again.. we Asians cannot give up our past .. that's all.

Akmal bhai, we all know that is the case becuase they most likely became officer after Bangladesh got liberated and product of BMA.

You are right on the money because
Sprit of independence has whole different meaning for Awami League than rest of Bangladeshi population. In Awami League view “sprit of independence” means gain independence from Pakistan and then surrender Bangladesh independence to India. During 1971 when whole country fought Awami leaders stayed in india, spending and enjoying foreign aid and done things don’t want to discuss here. And last 40 years are evidence enough to see how Awami League tried to turn Bangladesh into indian subservient state. So when Hasina talks about “sprit of independence” she only means submission and subservience to india.

Awami league has tradition to label anyone criticizing their acts be that Awami indian submission, corruption or misrule, as “razakar”. Even Kader Sidiquqi was called razakar. So when Awami tools call us “razakar” (which is not even humanly possible) we have to take that as we are doing and saying something right.
