Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday asked the members of Bangladesh Air Force to remain always ready imbued with patriotism to safeguard the country’s independence and sovereignty.

The Prime Minister gave the directive while addressing the induction ceremony of surface-to-air missile system and Bangabandhu Aeronautical Centre at Kurmitola Air Force Base in the morning.

The missile system of FM-90 category is a short-range air defence system (SRADS). This is an advanced all weather surface-to-air defence weapon which is capable of engaging targets flying at low or very low altitude. It has high skill probability and impressive engagement capability at very low altitude. It has also very short reaction time. The system can engage aircraft, helicopters, and precision-guided weapons, such as, cruise missiles, technical air-to-ground missiles, anti-radiation missile etc.

The FM-90 weapon system is mainly used for the protection of key installments, such as, airfield and aerodrome facilities, command control communication centres, bridges etc and it can also provide air defence for fielded force.

The government of China extended cooperation in installing the surface-to-air missile system and setting up the Bangabandhu Aeronautical centre.

Addressing the induction ceremony, the Prime Minister said the government is working to build the Air Force as a modern, skilled and strong force in line with the Vision 2021.

Later, the Prime Minister addressed the officers of the Air Force saying that there is no alternative to having an effective Air Force to protect the independence and sovereignty of the motherland.

About the newly set up aeronautical centre, the Prime Minister said Bangladesh Air Force would not be able to repair the damaged aircraft and helicopters. Besides, the force can make light tools of aircraft at the aeronautical centre which would save huge amount of money, she said.

The Prime Minister hoped that the aeronautical centre would make prototype of light aircrafts by 2021.
“I also hope that you would one day make aircraft, helicopters and radars in the country,” she said

We should modernize the naval centers first and go on to build submarines and fighter ships in the country, since our shipping industry is blooming, it won't be a big deal!!

We are modernising our navy first. Thats why we are putting on hold our 4th gen fighter jet shopping

.
No, I mean to say that we should start building the fighter ships in our own country rather than buying from other countries, besides, the PM had said that they will buy a sub marine till 2021, I think we should be thinking how to build that in the country!!

We don't have the necessary industrial infrastructure to build large ships. Let alone subs. But we do already make small patrol ships.

bangladesh navy can have great benefits if they cooperate closely with the indian navy.....there's lot to learn and earn!!!!

The current capacity limit is 10,000 DWT for western marine while Ananda shipyard is
preparing for bigger ones. Presently ocean going vessels of 5-6000 DWT has been made for
several countries. Subs are typically of lesser DWT although thats a whole new opera altogether.

According to information published in the journal «Jane's Defence Weekly», Shah Mohammad Ziaur Rahman (Marshal and Chief of Air Staff, Bangladesh), said at an international conference in London on 2011 that the purchase of aircraft F-7BGI will be for a transitional period and in the next 13-15 years, the Air Force intends to acquire a new generation of fighters (32 unit). The options being considered is the MiG-29CMT, Lockheed Martin F-16 and Su-30 and the Saab JAS-39.

So, my friend, how did you come to this conclusion that 4th gen fighter program is on hold!!!

I think it'd be better to make them for commercial purposes first :D

You misunderstood me. I meant we are not buying 4th gen jets now(2011) cos we are developing our navy first

To support your point, besides commercial ships, Bangladesh makes some Auxiliary ships, speed boats, Coastal patrol craft (Porte Grand class, Ruposhi Bangla Class), Riverine patrol craft (Pabna class) and also has signed contract with KSY to build 5 missile OPV of 300 tonne displacement with Chinese assistance.

. .
I know those. I am talking about big guns like destroyers :D And I mean truly world class destroyers.

But the PM has said that they are hoping to build the war ships in the country by 2021! Besides there are some naval and marine engineering universities as well!! So we should be trying to modernize those to the world class and include the modern syllabus to build war ships and sub marines!!

It'd be better to build commercial ones first. Military ships can be very complex projects to start with. So, one at a time :P

Chittagong has potential to be a huge trading hub in Asia.
