PM gets formal invite for NAM Summit in Tehran

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today got a formal invite from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmedinejad for the NAM Summit to be held in Tehran in August.

The invite was handed over to Singh by Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi when he met him here as the Special Envoy of the President.

There was no confirmation whether the Prime Minister will travel to Iran to attend the Summit of 120 member-countries.

Sources said a decision on whether the Prime Minister will attend the Summit will be taken later.

India has been facing intense US pressure for reducing its engagement with Iran, particularly oil imports, in view of sanctions imposed by some countries.

However, External Affairs Minister S M Krishna had yesterday made it clear that Iran is a "key country" for meeting India's energy needs and that the US pressure to reduce oil imports from Iran will not impact its "legitimate" trade ties.

After his talks with Salehi, Krishna had said while India abided by the UNSC resolutions on Iran, unilateral or regional sanctions tend to impact on the market in a globalised world.

"As far as other sanctions, those decided either unilaterally or regionally, we are aware of such measures. In a globalised world, such actions tend to impact on the market and our commercial entities take these into account. Such measures should not impact legitimate trade interests," he had told reporters here with Salehi by his side.

. . .
I think this is all well and good but is anyone in India (including media which have been silent on this) going to draw attention to the fact that Iran perpertrated a terror attack on Indian soil?

.
India should go to the summit and call publicly, in the meeting, for the Iranians to give up their nuclear weapons program.

If that is on the agenda of the summit, we will surely voice our opinion.

MMS should definitely go for this summit....
It depends on the participation of other high level dignitaries from all over the world i.e. unless we see high profile names(official heads of state) from other powerhouse nations attending I doubt MMS would wanna be the odd one out especially after Hillary's visit last month !

How many more times do we have to say it ? They have always assured us they are looking for peaceful use of nuclear energy .Can't do much after that .

Was it ever confirmed ?

Well I believe a few Iranians in India were arrested in connection with the incident. But not much has been said beyond initial finger pointing.

Why should they? Iranians should be allowed to pursue such weapons for peaceful purposes....especially since Pakistan has them

Sounds like a set up

That would lead to public Humiliation and venom spurting by Mr Ahmedenijad. We all know Diplomancy is not working any more.

It will be most apt if 7th feet sends a wing of F18s for Air Space Violation of "Arak" or "Bushehr". This will give a terrifying message to "Land of Aryans" or Iran
