PADRAUNA (UP): BJP's Prime Ministerial candidate L K Advani on Saturday came out in support of Varun Gandhi, under fire for his alleged hate

speeches, and said it was the opposition which had made him a "poster boy".

He accused the Election Commission of exceeding its brief by suggesting BJP should not field him as a candidate in the election.

"We did not make Varun Gandhi a poster boy. It is the others who give publicity. Most of the time, our opponents have made him a poster boy," Advani said.

Advani attacked the Election Commission's suggestion that Gandhi should not be given nomination by BJP as the poll panel had found him guilty of making inflammatory speeches in his constituency Pilibhit.

"The case of Varun Gandhi got wide publicity as the Election Commission did something unprecedented. I was surprised. I support Varun because EC has done an illegal thing as the charge against him has not been proved," Advani said.

Without naming actor Sanjay Dutt, who is set to contest from Lucknow as Samajwadi Party candidate, he said "one who has been convicted is contesting from Lucknow but the Election Commission has not said anything."

Advani addressed election meetings for BJP candidates in Padrauna and Maharajganj areas of Uttar Pradesh.

Some of the locals raised slogans of "Varun Gandhi zindabad" during Advani's speech.

One of the main BJP allies JD(U) has demanded legal action against Gandhi and condemned the statements allegedly made by him.

Asked for his reaction to JD(U) stand, Advani said he had already made clear that he did not agree with the alleged statements made by Varun Gandhi.

"I have already said that I did not agree with what was stated in the CDs," he said.

PILIBHIT: Police on Saturday fought pitched battles with BJP workers and saffron activists backing Varun Gandhi and resorted to firing and lathi

charge on stone-pelting protesters in all of which more than 20 persons, including five policemen, were injured. ( Watch )

Varun's mother and Pilibhit MP Maneka Gandhi, who came here to meet him in the jail, lent a communal touch by alleging that a Muslim police inspector injured 25 of Varun's supporters.

Principal Secretary (Home) Fateh Bahadur Singh refused to comment on her allegations in Lucknow saying the district administration was competent to react to it.

Tension prevailed in the town as thousands of Varun's supporters gharaoed the district jail where he was taken after he surrendered before a local court which remanded him to judicial custody till Monday in the case against him for his alleged inflammatory communal speeches.

The unruly mob allegedly attacked officials, destroyed police vehicles and indulged in bouts of stone throwing. Police returned the missiles and lathi charged the protesters who repeatedly attacked the personnel.

As the situation failed to subside, police resorted to firing in which a number of people were injured. Maneka alleged that 45 people were injured, 25 of them by one particular inspector.

Claiming that she has been "keeping an eye on him for quite some time", Maneka said she was "saddened" by the police action and appealed to all sides to maintain calm.

While clashes continued till late in the evening with incidents of sporadic violence, the police sought to bring the situation under control by firing several rounds in the air, lobbed teargas shells and cane charged the mob, which continued to its siege of the jail.

BJP leaders alleged that the police fired several rounds on the party workers. The protesters also attacked houses of police and jail personnel located within the district jail premises.

Senior officials including IG Bareilly Javed Akhtar had reached the spot and reinforcement was ordered.

The agitated BJP workers, who were staging dharna outside the district jail, were demanding Gandhi's release and action against a police inspector they alleged was responsible for firing and injuring several persons.

Reports said that some persons have been detained by the police for creating trouble.

Maneka charged the police with committing excess and atrocities on innocent BJP workers.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission said that it was closely monitoring situation in Pilibhit and appropriate action would be taken at appropriate time.

"The district administration will deal with the situation. Whatever is required will be done," Chief Electoral Office Anuj Kumar Bishnoi told reporters in Lucknow.

Bishnoi said that the entire proceedings of the day's development had been videographed.

BJP can slowly detach itself from RSS , its not 1990s , Now its a developed political party with more influence in Indian politics . Better if they come out "Hinduism" and leave RSS to do that job and takes care of people . Looks like Advani disparately looking for PM post, this would degrade him, I think he can gain more respect by avoiding this "Hindutva" image . He is a very good and strong leader.

Hindutva is the lifeline of BJP. Without aggressive Hindutva, BJP has no existence.

With Advani's involvement it seems like Varun Gandhi's remarks were intentionally raised in the general public in hopes this would stir up some support for BJP.

Let's see if India votes secularism or mad militant Hinduism.

BJP is digging its own grave. Their main driving point as alternative to congress got challenged by the third front. Now they are only counting on Hindutva.
Let us see what India will give them.
If this experiment of BJP fails badly, it will be death of political hindutva in India. Atleast people wont have a reason to beetch about Hindu-India nexus.

I remember an Indian member on this board who wrote that Advani had become more mature and down-to-earth. I was skeptic and now we see the reality. Bad politicians can never change. Also Gandhi particularly didn't do the BJP a favour.
