Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has approved two additional coal fired power plants to be constructed in Gadani.

He gave the approval at a meeting to review the pace of work on Gadani Power Project in Lahore today.

The Prime Minister said attractive tariff for coal fired power plants has drawn investors from the world to invest in Pakistan's power projects.

He also appreciated Chinese investment in energy sector and especially at Gadani Power Park. He directed to allocate sufficient funds for these projects in the Public Sector Development Programme.

Earlier, the Prime Minister was given a detailed briefing on the status of the project. He was told that the feasibility study of the infrastructure installation would be completed by end of June which included geo-technical investigation, water resource survey, jetty break water and cooling water intake system.

The environment impact system study would be completed by the end of next month.

The Prime Minister was briefed that the work on land leveling and grading on the site would start within three weeks and be completed in three months.

He was also briefed that the coal handling and conveying system infrastructure would be installed in 22 months. Similarly jetty break water and allied infrastructure would be completed in 32 months.

what will be the environment protection measures for this coal fired power plants ???
Do you know that ADB stopped funding thar based plants because the thar coal created more pollution than imported coal. These plants will be run on imported coal and thus more environment friendly than those who would be operated using thar coal.

We are continuously seeing an increase in these power plants ...which is good any idea when loadshedding situation will improve?

thar coal is more polluted of course but i think ADB was not willing to give loan due to non availbilty of thar coal rather than pllution

Latest news, Chinese company will invest in Thar Coal, 10 million tons a year. Do you think if coal quality was higher then lots of countries will invest to extract and export? Maybe there are some areas where coal is higher quality.

During his two-day visit, Gerhaeusser will meet Finance Minister Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh and Water and Power Minister Ahmad Mukhtar. He will also hold meetings to review communication projects.

Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf had placed a ban on imported coal-powered plants in a bid to encourage consumption of Thar coal in such projects. However, the ADB resisted the move and refused to extend loans for Thar coal-based power plants.

The bank was of the view that higher dependence on lignite would increase pollution, which was against the environmental policy of the lending agency.

Can India invest in pakistan?

Yes India can also invest in Pakistan Thar coal. Couple of years ago stupid PPP rejected Indian offer, but this time with Nawaz maybe there will be some deal. Maybe the reason was company wanted to extract coal and export to India. Stupid reason i think, let them export cheap coal from Pakistan to India. Its not like there are any shortage of coal anyway.

Raja Ashraf/PPP the retard crimnal wasted good 2-3 years, otherwise we may have had some coal plants up and running by now.

Technically we are adding more numbers to power generation since 2012. But the numbers are too little for it to make significant difference. The total production might be close to 20,000MW in the next 3 years (rough guess so don't take it as credible source) but the demand will also rise with time and there will be some energy deficits for a long time, until the dams are built.

Even 50,000MW is little electricity in proportion to large population of Pakistan and the growing energy demand. So it is a long battle and will take time to completely eliminate it. Yes we can reduce it to level where it is tolerable in the next few years.

pakistan will never develop because of our stupid mentality we rejected reliance offer to import coal as well as the gold project for reason quoting under pricing..

back in 2002 the total installed capacity was 20,000 however only IPPs and WAPDA hydro are running on efficiency DESCOs are too expensive to run due to ineffciency and corruption, govt need to privatize and convert them to coal instead of adding new plants

I know even now the total installed capacity is close to 22,000MW. But they don't run the plants due to high cost of generation. They are maintaining the balance between cost of production and sale. If they provide 24 hour electricity, expect to double the net losses of circular debt.

My point is the stable generation capacity. After 3 years we will have at least 2000 - 3000 MW of electricity from Hydro, Chashma III and possibly IV Nuclear Power plant, some coal based power plants up n running as well as the solar and wind power. So the overall capacity is going to increase and this is mostly cheap source of electricity. We got the high cost energy options already, its just the effort to introduce cheaper source to maintain balance.

PS: I think the installed capacity you are mentioning is of 2008 and not 2002. But that's not the point to discuss so no worries.

Seeing a lot of approvals for the power plants in Pakistan. Seems like this is one sector Pakistan must open to Indian investments.

Why we are going for coal generated electricity??

World is closing coal generated power plants because they are big contributors of global warming and we are putting them in place. Our region is one of the worst hit area of global warming and we are making sure that it got worst.:hitwall:

Doctor Danish did a program on a TV Channel in which he proved that it will be very deadly for people of Karachi if coal power generation units are installed in Gadani.
