Mr Zardari arrives in Britain this week facing accusations that he is using a meeting with Mr Cameron as a smokescreen for an attempt to shore up his political dynasty, at a time his country is struggling to cope with its worst floods for 80 years.

His decision not to fly home has led to suggestions that his real motive is not the meeting with Mr Cameron, but a rally in Birmingham at which he will help launch his son’s campaign to succeed him.

Khalid Mahmood, the Labour MP for Birmingham Perry Bar, suggested that Mr Zardari was visiting Britain for “political reasons” involving his son’s career, and called on him to cancel the trip.

Imran Khan, the former cricketer and chairman of the opposition PTI party, joined the growing chorus of voices demanding that Mr Zardari return to Pakistan to take charge of the response to floods that have killed 1,500 and left millions homeless.

Mr Zardari, the widower of Benazir Bhutto, the former Pakistani prime minister, had suggested he might cancel his meeting with Mr Cameron following the Prime Minister’s controversial comments about Pakistan exporting terrorism.

However, critics claim that the visit was never in doubt because Mr Zardari, who has faced repeated allegations of corruption and investigations into the source of his estimated £1.1 billion fortune, is desperate to win over British Pakistanis who could make or break his son’s career.

Mr Zardari will address 3,000 members of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) from behind a bulletproof screen at the Birmingham International Convention Centre on Saturday to launch his son’s active political career.

Bilawal Zardari, 21, an Oxford University graduate, is already the chairman of the PPP, but cannot stand for office until the age of 25. The visit is crucial to his prospects because his father needs the support of influential British Pakistanis, many of whom opposed his anointment as PPP co-chairman, together with his son, following the assassination of his wife.

The trip has caused further controversy in Pakistan after it emerged that the cost of the rally, estimated at £60,000, will be paid out of Pakistani state funds, as it is being described as a “presidential” function.

Mr Mahmood said he was “thoroughly against” the visit. “When there are literally thousands of people dying and a huge amount of disease it is inappropriate for him to be staying in Britain in five-star hotels,” he said. “His disregard for what the people of his own nation are going through is clear as he swans around Paris and the UK.”

Imran Khan said Mr Zardari should have cancelled the visit, with his country in the grip of floods that have “unleashed widespread devastation”.

Mr Mahmood and a Labour peer, Lord Ahmed, have turned down an invitation to meet Mr Zardari on Thursday as part of a group of British politicians of Pakistani origin.

Pakistani British lawmakers slam Zardari visit

Tuesday, 03 Aug, 2010

LONDON: British lawmakers of Pakistani origin hit out at President Asif Ali Zardari on Tuesday, saying he should be back home sorting out the flooding disaster rather than launching his son's career.

Some ethnic Pakistani politicians have pulled out of a planned meeting with Zardari, insisting he should abandon his visit to Britain to head up Islamabad's response to the devastating floods.

Zardari starts his five-day visit later Tuesday. Alongside talks with Prime Minister David Cameron, Zardari was to meet with Pakistani-origin lawmakers, and attend an event Saturday which reports say is primarily to launch the political career of his son Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

The 21-year-old is the son of Zardari and former prime minister Benazir Bhutto. He is co-chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party alongside his father and has been studying at Britain's Oxford University.

“I'm not going to meet with the president because I believe that a head of state needs to be in his country of origin when there's a state of emergency,” Lord Nazir Ahmed told AFP.

“For him to spend tens of thousands of pounds (dollars, euros) on the launch of his son's political career at a time when his country needs him shows that he's out of touch and his advisors are ill-informed.

“Quite frankly, staying in five-star hotels with his huge entourage, tens of big cars that have been hired just to give him this protocol in London, it's quite outrageous.”

Ahmed, from the opposition Labour Party, has pulled out of Thursday's lunch event at a London hotel.

“I would rather the money should go to the flood victims than wasting money on a five-star lunch. I could have easily met him at the high commission for a cup of tea,” the Pakistan-born peer said.

Fellow Labour lawmaker Khalid Mahmood has also turned down his invite, insisting Zardari should be in Pakistan rather than visiting Britain for political reasons.

“The issue is the huge environmental catastrophe that's going on - a lot of people are dying there,” he said.

“No matter what he can do or can't do, he should be there to try to support the people, not swanning around in the UK and France.”

A spokesman for Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, Britain's first female Muslim Cabinet minister, told AFP she will be attending the meeting.

Qassim Afzal, a senior Lib Dem politician of Pakistan origin, said he would attend the meeting, even if “British Pakistanis themselves feel that at this moment in time he should have stayed in Pakistan.” – AFP

It would have been better if Zardari and Co said okay we have a disaster, i have some explaining to do... I will still go, but this executive jet is going to cost a lot to operate.

Okay here is what im going to do, book me my team on PIA, saving the cost of the jet fuel, parking charges etc... Donate those to the relief fund, and instead of staying at the Belgravia, i will stay at a £40 Bed and Breakfast in the west end and donate the savings to the relief fund.

And as another sign of my sincerity with the people of Pakistan, i will donate my months wages and a portion of my corporate profit as "Zaqat" to the relief fun.

Pitty our leaders just think, Kita Kahun aur Kitna Khana ko milayga.. Kaum Gaye bhar mey... Doob re hai tau doobne do... Mar re hain to marne do.

Here is a nice little article:
