China has announced it will hold its biggest ever naval drill with Russia starting in the Sea of Japan on Friday. The move will strengthen Russia's military relations with China, which has emerged as a major buyer of Russian arms along with India.

"This marks our navy's single biggest deployment of military force in a China-foreign joint exercise," the defence ministry said. Its navy will send four destroyers, two guided missile frigates, and a support ship for the "Joint Sea-2013 " exercises, which run through July 12.

The move is bound to affect the ongoing dispute between China and Japan over the Diaoyu islands in the East China Sea, sources said.

The Chinese announcement comes soon after Tokyo revealed plans to hold a joint military exercise with the US.

According to China's Xinhua News Agency, a fleet of seven naval vessels departed from Qingdao harbor in eastern China on Monday to take part in joint naval drills with Russia in the Sea of Japan, apparently coinciding with the seven ships seen passing through the Tsushima Strait.

Meanwhile, a Chinese research vessel was found operating in Japan's exclusive economic zone near the southernmost island of Okinotori on Wednesday.

A jet plane of the 3rd Regional Coast Guard Headquarters, based in Yokohama, spotted the vessel sailing around 85 kilometers north of the island, with a wire lowered into the water, a headquarters official said.

Okinotori, a tiny atoll around 1,700 kilometers south of Tokyo, is considered strategically important. China argues it is a group of rocks rather than an island, rejecting it as a base point for Japan's 200-nautical mile EEZ.

Awful newspaper the Global Times has launched 'Defence of the Diaoyu Islands', a screen-scrolling shooter to add to the growing list of 'red games'.
The game opens with an explanatory pop-up about how the Diaoyu/Senkaku islands are undeniably Chinese territory.We'll defer to Eric Jou of Kotaku's expertise when it comes to judging 'Defence' from a gamer's standpoint:
Control wise the game is very simple, use the mouse to aim and click to shoot. The arrow keys control movement, left, right, up and down.
When you die, or win (I haven't been able to win), the screen takes you to a web portal all about the current situation between China and Japan. It is an interesting read for anyone who can read Chinese.
Not much can be said for the music and the graphics but it's a fun simple game. Take away all anti-Japanese messages and you have a very generic shooter. It's not exactly worth playing in the sense that it's a great game, but instead to look at the lengths State media will go to propagate the party line, that the Islands belong to China.
