Pir Panchal Railway Tunnel : A Photo Feature

Asia’s second longest railway tunnel is an engineering marvel. Constructed in rugged terrains, the tunnel is aligned from North to South for its length.

The construction method adopted is New Austrian Tunneling Method(NATM) with latest technologies of 3D monitoring system.

Water Proof and completely equipped with fire fighting system throughout the entire length.

It is constructed in the rugged terrains. It connects the Bichleri valley at the south side with the Kashmir valley on the North side. The quantum of work involves one million cum of under ground excavation in the young Himalayan region with surprising geological challenges.

The nearest town in South and North side is Banihal and Qazigund respectively.

Divided into six zones, the contract for zone iv and v has been executed by HCC, one of the pioneer companies in construction and infrastructure development.

The tunnel is expected to flip the roles. Banihal is about to become new destination. Local children did not miss a photo opportunity.

The tunnel is a major part of Udhampur- Srinagar- Baramulla broad gauge rail line project.

Highest over burden of 1100 m, road headers were used for the first time in India for railway tunneling.

The Pir Panchal tunnel passes 440 m below the existing Jawahar road tunnel and crosses NH1 in three locations.

Provision of 3m wide concrete road inside the tunnel throughout the length for maintenance and emergency relief purpose and usage of geotechnical instruments for routine monitoring .

Over 1500 workers were employed to work on the project. Most of the labourers engaged were from Nepal and various states of India, several departments of HCC engineers and foreign technicians have been involved in specialized tasks on the tunnel.

its a good development in the kashmir valley to connect with India's main land,and also we can dispatch the troops immediately to border regions during conflicts... ;) :tup:

Will the Kashmiris be grateful for this?

There are two ways to look at this.

1. We think that Kashmiris should think of themselves as Indians first.
In that case, the fact that one important area of India got a railway connection after 65 years of independence.

Should Kashmiris be grateful or furious over this ?

2. We think Kashmiris should NOT think of themselves as Indians first.
In this case, should the Kashmiris feel grateful that Indians 'gave' something to the Kashmiris and they should now shut up in return.

You have to decide what the case is.

Personally i think they should be furious and demand like all other citizens of India do that their houses be powered by electricity 24*7 and that they should have not just a single railway connection, but a 6 lane expressway, metro trains in Jammu and Srinagar and a flyover at every red light in the cities.

Well My feeling is that, will they even consider them selves as Indians? Will this mean anyting for them? We can do all kind of develpment stuff for them but in the end if they are going to throw stones and say they want Freedom or want to join Pakistan all these investments are down the drain. Instead these funds can be diverted of NE people who consider them selves as Indians. I have interacted with few Kashmiris and all of them at no point of time consider them selves to be Indian.

Good move. Devlopment and investment is the ONLY true way any separatist ideas are going to die away. Provide young people jobs and a meaning to their lives- provide the opportunities for Kashmiris to be connected to be mainland in ever greater ways. Give them world class infrastructure like you are providing to other regions. Show these Indians that they are better off as part of the union than out of it.


Sme goes with the NE. Most of their complaints are about unemployment and poor infrastructure. Sort these out and the true hard liners will be completely marginalised by all.
