Toronto is the same. An hour from the city in any direction will take you to the country side. It's just so expensive to live here unless you bought a property 15 years ago. It's almost impossible for us to buy a house here unless we have millions stashed somewhere

Ontario alone is as big if not bigger than Pakistan. I'm talking about TORONTO.
Look up the average house price in Toronto. If you find me that same house in Toronto for the same price i will buy you one as well

I currently live in a city near Paris (It isn't France's most beautiful town, but has many charming places),I would like one day if possible to move to a smaller town somewhere in the countryside.

The remaining bell tower of a church which dates back from the XVIth century !

At least that isn't far from the La Défense business district. (Can be seen in the background)

So this is the area where I currently live in ;

As surprising as it might seem, there's a large green space where some goats are living. A natural sanctuary for animals in urban area... why not,I love it! And after the bridge, there's a big park. It's pretty good.

@Vergennes Looks nice and tidy. I live in a detached house similiar to the one I posted earlier in a very quite suburb on the end of a cul de sac. I have just trees and peace around me. This is my back garden. The room on the left lower floor is my main living room. In summer I can open my French Door and chill on the balcony with a wooden ship wheel.

Going to cheat here! This is my neighbouring county of Sussex. A point or place called Devil's Dyke. The view is extraordinarily breathtaking.

I love my town... after school and job training I was away for 12 years... first military service in north Germany during the cold war and its end, later I moved to south Germany into the Alps just at the boarder to Austria there I trained my second job after that I worked here and there for a year sometimes more to get more practis befor I returned to my hometown... and I was everytime very happy to be back.

My hometown had realy luck during ww2 only one allied bomb was accidently droped on the town by a US bomber, Franklin D Roosvelt, the President of the USA during ww2, vsited Bad Nauheim several times with his parents (his dad went for a water cure) and went to school in my hometwon for 6 mounths as he was young, he made here many friends, as President he gave the order that this town should never be attacked, he did not want that US bombs accidently kill one of his youth friends. During the war the town hostet several military medical hospitals including one for allied officers one more reason why the twon was not attacked.

Really beautiful places I mean, who doesn't think France and Paris as well as surrounding towns are not the romantic capitals of the world? There's a reason for that, the beauty and charm is like none other anywhere on this earth. The language, the cuisine, the culture, the history mixed with modernity, fashion, the people.

That church picture reminded me of something they do with those around here and especially in Boston. Being all about money here in the US, they NEVER allow a piece of prime real estate to stay like that just for historical purposes unless it's really part of history! It must be turned into a money making endeavor!

So they take these old churches that either have been falling apart or they lost the ability to pay for them or whatever reason and turn them into condominiums. Part of the appeal is to keep as much of the original structure and design and build upon it.

Part of this one had the roof deteriorated and collapsed so they kept the wall and another part of the old church.

It's all about making use of old buildings but keeping the charm, there is a historical society that is very strict about preservation but when the city wants to make use of these old buildings and improve the area while making lots of money for everyone, then it doesn't become a problem. I was surprised that no one jumped on that old church in your town! :-)

Actually, that's how the church looked in the 1950s. (with the bell tower)

tta.jpg

You must know that all over the history of the church,it was many times transformed, restaured and reduced,to create roads and enlarge streets. (1849,1885,1892)

In 1937,the Prefecture ordered to destroy the church. (because of its poor state)
Many Merovingian sarcophagis were discovered, which suggests the existence of a first church in this place that dates back from the twelfth century !

The tower bell was saved in extremis in 1968. So the bell tower was saved, and renovated. The former municipality made urgent consolidations to the tower.

Few months ago,our municipality has launched a project to safeguard the monument and to urgently restore it. This will cost €1,8 million. For the town that represents a big budget. But it is helped financially by the département (with €500K ) and the regional directorate of culture affairs.

The work will include the consolidation of structures, lowering of exertal floors, protection of the vestiges by a cover with lightweight frame and a system of rainwater recovery,it will be protected against pollution and bad weather, reinforce the building as a visual landmark thanks to a contemporary cover and creation of temporary exhibitions. A reflecting pool will be built on which will be placed the bell tower,"to give it back all its prestige". Among all other works....

Work should begin next month !

Very sorry,I couldn't find better pics.

PS : More history ; During the revolution, the church was transformed into a temple of the 'reason',there were no more religious services dedicated to the Catholic worship, only ceremonies calling for the support of the revolution and its ideas !
