Lantau Island 大嶼山


Tung Chung 東涌 is situated on the north-western coast of Lantau Island. It is currently one of the latest generation of new towns developed from a small rural village. Developed as part of the Airport Core Programme, with HK International Airport across a narrow channel. It's easily accessible by Lantau Link (road and MRT), air, sea and Ngong Ping 360.

Hong Kong, with 7 million people and about 350(?) legal immigrants enter everyday, needs many new towns like this

Lantau Island 大嶼山


Tung Chung Fort 東涌古城 was built in the Southern Song era 1174-1179 to fight the pirates. In 1817 the Qing government rebuilt the fort to fight against the pirates, who were robbing this area rampantly again, and foreigners. Since then it was used by different groups and now is the base for Rural Committee Office and the Tung Chung Public School.

Tung Chung Battery 東涌小炮台 c1817 it is a companion of Tung Chung Fort of the south.

Lantau Island 大嶼山


Tung Chung Road 東涌道 is a two disjointed-section road and also the only road connecting the north and south coast of Lantau Island. The short section is featured with historical Tung Chung Battery that extends to another village. The long section is a long, steep, narrow and winding road opens to only buses, taxis and permit-bearing vehicles only and speed limit is set to 30 km/h. It proceeds upwards to the valley between Sunset Peak and Lantau Peak. It reaches its highest point at a pass in Pak Kung Au, where hikers of the two peaks get off, then follows a steep downhill path to Cheung Sha.

Lantau Island 大嶼山


Discovery Bay 愉景灣 is a low density housing development, with many open areas and beautiful beaches, that's perfectly suited for living. It consists of two bays, Tai Pak Bay 大白灣 and Yi Pak Bay 二白灣. It has only 18,000 residents with a sizable community of expatriates from 30 countries. It situates on the northeastern coast of Lantau where all kind of transportation are conveniently located.

Lantau Island 大嶼山


Chek Lap Kok 赤鱲角 was the result of merger and leveled with another island when the HK International Airport (open 1998) was built. It lies right off Lantau's northern shore separates by a narrow channel and it also houses the Hong Kong SkyCity 香港航天城 that includes the AsiaWorld-Expo, SkyPlaza and SkyPier. The Lantau Link, or Route 8, of road, bridges and MRT trains connects the island to the rest of HK and the recent addition of Ngong Ping 360 connects to the rest of Lantau.

AsiaWorld-Expo 亞洲國際博覽館 in Chek Lap Kok offers over 70,000 square metres of rentable space with 10 ground-level and column-free halls, including the AsiaWorld-Arena – the biggest purpose-built indoor seated entertainment arena in Hong Kong with a maximum capacity of 14,000.

I heard that there was a rule in the old colonial days that forbade Chinese to live in the peak.

^^^Yeah, there were such rules. You know how it was (still exist today) the Brits were very snobbish and they treated their colonial subjects relatively better than the other powers but always with condescension.

That kid is probably doing a brave photo shot, I'm sure there's a relative flat area beyond where he is doing a 'fearless macho guy' look.
