Hongcun Village 宏村 in Anhui

Surrounded by fields of bright yellow from the canola flowers lies the ancient city of Hongcun. The village dates back to the Ming dynasty with some buildings still standing from that time, most of them seemed to be from the Qing though. Home to extremely successful Hui businessmen, away from their strong holds in the north, the influence of Hongcun and other ancient Anhui villages can be seen throughout the country in the architecture. The southern part of Anhui or the state of Hui as it was called before Anhui was formed was the home for a very successful business culture, that’s where it gets the second part of its name.

What do you mean 'some pictures fail'? They don't appear on your screen? None of them missing on mine though.

I cannot see some of the pictures as well. The first picture on post#16 is not visible, it could be browser related issue as well. I am using Firefox browser and will try to open the site on chrome or safari and let you guys know if pictures show up in full.

Thank you ahfatzia for sharing the real China and her ethnic groups. It is quiet different and beautiful dresses along with the silver jewellery. Excellent post. One thing I would like to know about the rooftops, Why do the edges have something pointing skywards. Is it a cultural, if so what is the meaning of it and when was it started?

it is called horse-head-wall(马头墙),it is a firewall.and the pointing sky part is horse-head. horse is a lovely friend of human in China.there are many good idioms about horses ,such as 一马当先,马到成功.horse-head is for good willings.

They all look Chinese to me. Can a Chinese differentiate between a fellow citizen of China from a different ethnicity?

For the untrained eye it can be quite difficult to differentiate. China is a giant and has absorbed many many mongoloid types from north to south. In south you can see the overlap between southern mongoloid type and northern type.

Rice wine made in Rongshui Miao Autonomous County

People of ethnic groups of Miao, Yao, Dong and Zhuang in Rongshui usually make rice wine to celebrate the Double Ninth Festival (September 9 in Lunar Calender), or Chongyang Festival 重陽節, which is a traditional Chinese holiday, with the tradition of visiting grave sites of their ancestors up the hills.

Miao people 苗族

Miao people 苗族. There are about 9 million ethnic Miao people living, most if not all, live in southern China in the provinces of Guizhou, Hunan, Yunnan, Sichuan, Guangxi, Hainan, Guangdong, and Hubei. Some members of the Miao sub-groups, most notably Hmong people, have migrated out of China into Southeast Asia (northern Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand). Following the communist takeover of Laos in 1975, a large group of Hmong refugees resettled in several Western nations, such as the United States, France, Australia, and elsewhere. Within China the Miaos are divided into 4 subgroups:

1) Ghao Xong; Red Miao; primary live in western Hunan

2) Hmu, Gha Ne (Ka Nao); Black Miao; live in southeast Guizhou

3) A-Hmao; Big Flowery Miao; northwest Guizhou and live innortheast Yunnan

4) Gha-Mu, Hmong, White Miao, Mong, Green (Blue) Miao, Small Flowery Miao; live in south Sichuan, west Guizhou and south Yunnan

Altogether there are approximately 8 million speakers in the Miao language family. This language family, which consists of 6 languages and around 35 dialects (some of which are mutually intelligible). The Hmong primarily live in the northern mountainous reaches of Southeast Asia including Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, and in far Southwest China mostly in the provinces of Yunnan, Guangxi, and to a very limited extend in Guizhou. There are about 1.5-2 million Hmong in China. The Miaos are indigenous and their histories are as old as any group in China and today, they're more or less mountain dwellers and farmers.
