What kind of bow is that? It's really short and formed like a longbow. The draw on that would be really difficult. Plus the bow string seems to have an extra piece towards the center. Is that a sling shot or bow? It's very usual.

It's a sling shot although it'll take a beginner a little while to master it.

蔑弹弓是云南少数民族独有的弹射武器，盛行于德昂、傣、基诺等民族中。蔑弹弓又称泥弹弓，形状和普通射箭的弓一样，其弓和弦都是用蔑制成，弓弦上有一小兜， 用来放置弹丸。不少人出工都带在身边，打离群的牛羊、打田边地角的鸟雀和树上的果子等。

德昂族人数不多，又与其他许多兄弟民族同田共耦，所以在文体活动动的许多方面，与信仰小乘佛教的阿昌、拉祜，特别是傣族有着很多的共同之处。

　　在德昂族民间最具群众基础的体育运动，当属传统武术。

　　武术：德昂族的武术主要表现在拳术上，德昂族的拳术有：梅花拳、左拳、四门拳、白昼拳、碾子拳和单刀，具有出拳利索、坚韧勇猛的特点。既可观赏，又有强身自卫的作用。

　　德昂族的梅花拳最早见于明末，因为是在七根酒杯粗、斗米高的梅花竹桩上练习起拳踢脚，故得名为梅花拳，世代相传至今。

　　左拳是德昂族灵活多变的一种拳路，迎战对方时，以左手出击的绝招，往往会因为出其不意而获胜，所以民间向有“左手定输赢”之说。

　　德昂族武术选手姚自新在全国少数民族传统体育运动会上所表演的四门拳套路，以稳、快、起、伏折、软、舒而受到武术界同等的赞扬。

Thanks for the information. I think I've come across something like that. There are groups in SEA and SA that use that. They'll even use that on charging elephants by aiming for the eyes. That's a bit too insane for me.

Maonan people 毛南族


There are approximately 110,000 Maonan people 毛南族 live in China and about 90% of them live in Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County 环江毛南族自治县 in northern Guangxi, SW China


Huanjiang 环江 is in northern Guangxi, bordering Guizhou in the north and west

Maonan people 毛南族, numbered about 110,000, are one of the official recognized ethnic group by China. Most Maonan live in Huanjiang Maonan Autonomous County 环江毛南族自治县 in northern Guangxi and there are about 12,000 living in 黔南州卡蒲毛南族乡 Guizhou.


Approximately half of all Maonan people are capable of speaking Maonan language and many can speak Chinese and some other ethnic language. The Maonan do not have a writing system. Traditional Maonan religion is both animistic and polytheistic, with heavy Taoist influences. Many deities and rituals are borrowed from Chinese folk religion. Tan is a last name shared by more than 80% Maonan.

The biggest festival of the year for the Maonan people is the Fenlong Festival 分龙节. On that day the Maonan come out to ask their God for blessings. They ask the God for good harvests, good lives and well beings and it last for a couple of days
