Great Wall of China 萬里長城

Simatai Great Wall 司马台長城

"The Great Wall is the best of the Chinese buildings, and Simatai is the best of the Great Wall." Comments Professor Luo Zhewen, an expert specialist on the Great Wall. Simatai was originally built during the Northern Qi dynasty (550–577) and rebuilt in the Hongwu years of the Ming dynasty. Beijing is located 120km in the southwest and, on a clear day, its many high peaked towers can view the city with distinct views. It's a strategic pass that holds the access to our previous two sections of the GW: Gubeikou 古北口 and Jinshanling 金山岭.

Simatai Great Wall is separated by a valley into eastern and western parts. The western part appears gentle with 20 well-preserved watchtowers dotting along the wall. The eastern part is much steeper, following more rugged terrain that includes cliff edges and high peaks with similar amount of towers.

Simatai local map. notice a valley with a lake separates the east and the west great wall and a cable zip line takes visitors to some towers on top of the ridges.
