There are a lot of problems (political appointees, structure, routes, frequencies, quality control, staffing, service, mgmt, general incompetence, lack of analysis models and algorithms etc) at PIA and their solutions are long-term. But the question remains and one that no one is asking: What type of airline do the shareholders (GoP) foresee PIA being? There is a fundamental difference on what PIA can be vs what it should be. The airline industry is losing money (even well-established carriers like Singapore and Cathay Pacific) in all places in all countries and even if PIA does all the right things it may never be a profitable venture. There are other airlines like Qatar who give a hoot about profitability and can continue to outpace their competitors in service and capacity. There are airlines like MH and Garuda who have been burned trying to function as 5-star airlines. Then there are airlines which are not full-service carriers that ARE making money. British Airways has cut a lot of the perks one usually expects on a full-service carrier. That imho is the model to follow for an environment like Pak. Are Pakistanis ready to accept it?
