Internal audit report by PIA and CAA states that pilots and cabin crew members opt for expensive hotels instead of budgeted or in-house facilities during their travels

An internal audit report of the state-owned Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has revealed that the airline’s pilots are overpaid and spend on luxurious hotels despite having low productivity.

According to a report published by a local media outlet, overpaying pilots and luxurious spending by the pilots causes billions of rupees in losses to the national flag carrier and the government.

The internal audit report by PIA and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), pointed out lack of productivity among PIA pilots. The report points out that despite the airline’s pilots being highly paid, 49 to 81 per cent of the pilots were not completing their flying hours.

The internal audit also points out extravagant expenditure on hotels by the airlines pilots and cabin crew members during travel within and outside the country.

As a case in hand, PIA pilots and crew have been reported to book a five star hotel in Karachi, despite the airline owning a 300 room hotel in the city.

Moreover, during travel outside Pakistan the PIA crew has been reported to prefer expensive hotels for their stay over budgeted ones. The report adds that major expenditure can be saved if pilots and crew members opt to use in house facilities or choose budgeted hotels while traveling outside Pakistan.

According to the report, stays in expensive hotels outside Pakistan has caused the national flag carrier a loss of Rs408 million

no enough plane , no enough route ... kick them out.

.
Sell PIA to the highest bidder, and if that is not possible then shut it down, and stop the bleeding of tax payer money.
Enough is enough, cant go on like that forever. PIA is a cash cow to the corrupt elite and their lazy and unproductive staff. Get rid of it.

. .
I guess govt. is in no mood to privatise it. they aren’t selling the roosevolt hotel either which seems to be in debt as well. Lossses all around.

. . .
All the more incentive that PIA hotels need to be good enough for PIA crews.
i stayed there as stopover passenger. I think they have not been updated since 2000. Everything was old. I was afraid of pests. So didn't sleep well

I stayed at one of their hotels in Lahore, during a (23 hour !!!) layover, a few years ago. Instead of mineral water in a sealed bottle they gave me what I assume was tap water. It took me a week to recover. Since then I have refused to travel PIA.

Too be honest, PIA is a mess. It needs to come down to one type of aircraft; something like they A220 and fly as far as Turkey, the Gulf countries and parts of East Asia. Allow passengers to connect with other Laing haul airlines there. Open up routes from these places directly to the “smaller” cities of Pakistan, not just Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi. Share the operations and maintenance A220 with the Air Force and the Navy.

With a plane the size of the A220, its more likely the plane will fly full.

Also, if the airline is suppose to at least cover its costs, it’s needs to operate like Ryan Air. Cheaper tickets then it’s competition but also a no frills experience. No more VIP tickets for anyone, not even top politicians, they can fly on Air Force owned aircraft if used for state business. No more luxury air ports for pilots and crews. They get accommodations equivalents to the rating of the airline. 1 star airline gets 1 star accommodations.

Every government owned institution is mercilessly looting tax payers like PIA.
We need a revolution in this regard and all previous products of nepotism and safarish should be kicked out from government owned institutions.
Without merit it's a chichu ki maliya and a animal society.

All the mess PIA is in or was in, was because of ppp and pmln. Now Alhumdulillah, PIA is heading towards right direction although we can still hear the screams of ppp and pmln mafia from PIA who were assigned to destroy the airline. Inshaallah they will be crushed

Unfortunately our region is mess. If our region was prosperous, we could have good traffic in Iran, Afg, India, China. I heard every Ryan air flight takes a huge cargo, That is why passengers baggage is limited. S they basically earn by cargo (even if plane is not full).

we need to be mindful of the challenges, but focus on getting competitive with other regional airlines, at least for routes to and from Pakistan. If it doesn’t make economic sense then it should be privatized.

For example, if PIA can partner with Turkish airlines and fly the New York to Istanbul route on Turkish airlines, then have a short layover, and fly PIA direct to Multan, I would consider it over the Emirates/Fly Dubai option, if the prices or timing was competitive.

Yup if there can be an agreement. But airlines try to expand themselves. So they won't.
anyway, same as air india
