Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has become the first national airline to fly Boeing 737-800 aircraft.

PIA operated the two short to medium range, narrow-body jets on Friday. “The two Boeing 737-800 aircraft obtained by PIA on wet lease from a Turkish operator earlier this week are being put into operation from today,” the national flag carrier said in a statement. “No other airline in Pakistan is currently using this aircraft,” it added.

According to the state-owned airline, the aircraft have been obtained for a period of three months and two more similar aircraft are expected to join its fleet in near future.

The decision to induct the aircraft was taken in order to meet an acute shortage of airplanes which, the airline said, was created due to the grounding of four aged A-310 aircraft at the end of last year. “The narrow-body aircraft have a capacity of carrying 189 passengers in all-economy configuration.”

Giving out details of the newly-inducted aircraft’s flight schedule, it said: “The two aircraft would operate six flights today which include PK-316 (Karachi-Lahore), PK-317 (Lahore-Karachi), PK-306 (Karachi-Lahore), PK-307 (Lahore-Karachi), PK-380 (Karachi-Multan-Islamabad) and PK-319 (Islamabad-Karachi).”

Isn't Serene Air is going to use 737-800 ng in Pakistan so now PIA is aiming to compete with it or what?

I swear what PIA does makes no sense. PIA already operates a fleet of A320s aircraft flown by its own pilots, but now it's wet-leased two 737-800s from Turkey. If there was a need to expand capacity, why not dry-lease A320s. There are plenty out there.

737-800 is more cheaper, can carry more passengers and and can carry almost 20% more payload than a320

Cheaper how? Not knowing what price PIA is leasing the aircraft for, I'm assuming it's a substantial savings to acquire a completely new aircraft type and the costs associated with it. Why didn't they just lease 737-800s before taking the A320s? PIA did operate the 737-300s beforehand, and it's pilots could easily been trained to fly 737-800s.

PIA is flying these turkish 737-800 for almost past two years, and now they have added two more.

what the point having a massive workforce when u r going to operate ac on wet lease
this is BS that has destroyed PIA

I checked airfleets.net for the aircraft you speak of, but the only records they have are five 737-800s leased in 2014-2015. They have since been returned to the lessor as PIA replaced them with 320s.

Their fleet is struggling as older planes are being retired and not being replaced. that and they dont have cash. they have been focusing on their long haul fleet with 2/3 more nearly new a330-300's from sri-lanka and 8 787's from boeing next year. they need to focus on the narrow body fleet.

this pic shows the plane whenit was with srilankan airlines. (note its only 2 years old!)

To my understanding PIA might get rid of its premium service due to huge losses.

Wrong on two of those points. An A320 is both cheaper to buy and dry lease or wet lease.

Typical A320 airline empty weight 42.5t. Max zero fuel weight 62.5t which gives a max payload around 20t.

737-800 empty weight 42t , mzfw 62.7 with max payload a little over 20t.

How on earth is the payload difference between the two models anywhere near 20%?

this is BS that has destroyed PIA

The BS that has destroyed PIA is having to offer a taxi service to Northern Areas like Gilgit/Chitral and having fly to unprofitable destinations like Tokyo, Beijing, New York etc.

This wet lease seems to be a wet dream of someone in the top office of PIA. They are deliberately destroying the airline so that its privatisation can be justified.
