ISLAMABAD: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Chairman Azam Saigol tendered his resignation on Monday, citing personal reasons.

PIA spokesman Danyal Gilani confirmed the resignation of the PIA chief.

The move comes less than a week after PIA flight PK-661 crashed in Abbottabad district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on way to Islamabad from Chitral, leaving all 47 passengers and crew members dead.

Former singer turned preacher Junaid Jamshed, his wife, DC Chitral, his wife, daughter and three foreigners were also on board the ill-fated ATR plane.

Shortly after the crash, there were calls from opposition leaders for the PIA chairman to take responsibility for the crash and quit his job.

Although Mr Saigol has cited personal reasons for the move, sources say he was under pressure to step down in the wake of Wednesday’s deadly plane crash. – SAMAA

ISLAMABAD: Days after the national carrier’s flight PK-661 crashed near Islamabad, killing all 48 people on-board, PIA chairman Azam Saigol tendered his resignation from the post on Monday.

According to PIA spokesperson Danyal Gillani, Saigol tendered his resignation on ‘personal grounds’.

PIA temporarily grounds all ATR aircraft

Popular singer-turned-evangelist Junaid Jamshed, two Austrians, and a Chinese national were also on the PIA flight PK-661, which came down in the hills of Gagan, in Batolni village, some seven kilometres away from Havelian city, at around 4pm.

According to the airline, the plane was an ATR-42 turboprop aircraft, which lost contact with the Air Traffic Control (ATC) at Islamabad’s Benazir International Airport en route from Chitral.

Flight PK-661: No survivors

Saigol had blamed engine failure for the deadly crash. “I think there was no technical error or human error,” he told a news conference last week. “Obviously there will be a proper investigation.”

Meanwhile, the airline temporarily suspended on Monday its ATR operation as a second aircraft reported technical issues shortly before it was supposed to take off overnight.

The purchase dept senior members and the technical senior members should also resign as well

BBC urdu is reporting that PIA chairman have resigned . it seem our people start taking responsibility now . good

May be the by this act he wouldn't consider him that much responsible as he is.

Anyhow a well deserved resignation...

He might be looking to get off criminal charges. If there is any wrong doing or foul play at large then a simple resignation would not do. Criminal charges must be brought against him.

An other chance for NS to appoint an other 80+ person as chair main ,he is addicted to old craps as are Meera ,and Farheeha perwaiz,

There is a dire need of change in attitudes and practices along with the change of management. Unfortunately, the change remains cosmetic because even if the heads roll, the malpractices continue unhindered. Lately, efforts are there to increase salaries and perks but nothing is being done to improve the maintenance of aeroplanes.
