Philippines & China to sign military logistics deal

The Philippines, a long-time US ally and former colony, said it will sign a logistics supply deal with China to source military equipment to combat domestic security threats, including from Maoist rebels.

General Ricardo David, Chief of Staff of the 130,000-member Armed Forces of the Philippines, will fly on Tuesday to Beijing, where he will meet senior defense and army officials and also tour military facilities, the Philippine military said.

David will sign a defense logistics deal with his counterpart in the People's Liberation Army (PLA), with talks expected to cover regional security concerns, including tensions in the Korean peninsula and the peaceful resolution of disputes in the South China Sea, where Beijing and Manila have competing claims.

"I would suppose this will start the influx of logistics coming from mainland China," military spokesman Brigadier-General Jose Mabanta told reporters on the planned deal.

The Philippines has one of the weakest militaries in the Asia-Pacific region, in part relying on second-hand aircraft, boats and assault rifles from the United States, its closest security partner and former colonial ruler.

"I don't think there will be any political implications," Mabanta said when asked about the likely U.S. reaction. "The Philippine Armed Forces really lack funds and equipment and is ready and willing to accept equipment and much-needed resources from any donor country. This includes, of course, China."

Expanding soft power

Last year, a US congressional report warned of China's "soft power", of expanding its influence in the region through billions of dollars in development assistance and investments, particularly in the Philippines, Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar.

In August, US military officials said Chinese assertiveness in the South China Sea was causing concern in the region.

China has previously donated engineering equipment, such as graders and bulldozers, which the army used to build roads in rural areas where the Maoist New People's Army (NPA) is active. It has also offered to sell artillery, helicopters and boats.

Since 2000, Washington has donated more than $500 million of military equipment and supplies to Manila. It has also provided training and advice on countering Islamic militants in the south.

The United States has also funded assistance to poorer rural communities to check the spread of NPA influence and control.

You guys were colonized by the Spanish, and then the Japanese and more recently the Americans... The Philippines is one of the poorest countries in Asia. The average Chinese is over twice as rich as Filipinos.

PS: You guys are twice as rich as Vietnam. Vietnamese earn 1/2 of what Filipinos earn and 1/4 of what Chinese earn. Vietnam is a very poor country, don't sob.

You speak like you are the real Canadian? We Filipinos have fought many wars with our toughest brave to win back the independence, there was nobody give us a saintly helps as you lie.

And about the GDP, the Vietnamese may have less coins than us in some ways but in the general their country is far more money dual to their hidden black money which you could never imagine of.

The Vietnamese are always looking down on us because of our skin color, culture, language, and history, the Vietnamese both in Vietnam or overseas are all racist and ultra nationalists.

We Filipinos are really don't mind about what they think about us, we make them broken teeth.

I don't think so.
Following state statistics, Vietnam is poorer than Philippine, even people in Vietnam has a habitat to keep gold or US$ as reserve for family in worst situation. It's based on experiences from time of Vietnam wars with France, USA and China. amount is around 600 to 1,000 tons of Gold, but no one could know the real number correctly and then calculating to US$ is very few.

Of course, we never colonized the natives, their population was too sparse and nomadic for effective enslavement, and hence we lived apart, rather than as slavers and slaves.

The Philippines never won independence by itself. The Americans forced Spain to hand over Philippines as a colonial possession to the US. The Japanese then occupied your country, removing the Americans, murdering tens of thousands of Filipinos. After the nukes, the Americans returned to neo-colonize the region. Even today, the Philippines remain a textbook example of neocolonialism.

As for Vietnam, GDP is a measure of the total output of a country, not its cash. It is impossible to embezzle GDP. If corruption is rampant, then the average Vietnamese will be earning even less than their stated GDP figure.

In any case, corruption in the Philippines is also high, so the fact that you guys are x2 more productive, and less export oriented than Vietnam, means that you guys are effectively more than twice as a rich as the average Vietnamese.

As for history, Vietnam has been colonized for much longer than the Philippines. Vietnam was never a country, until the Qing Dynasty under the Manchus granted Annam (Vietnam) tributary status. The French and eventually the Japanese took over the country, similar to Philippine's fate.

On the language front, Vietnamese history was not recorded in its present alphebetical form either, but in Chinese. Present day Vietnamese cannot even understand their history as soon as 100 years ago.

As for skin color, Vietnam is not yellow. The country is heavily mixed, with other dark-toned South and South East Asians. The demographics had heavy inter-mingling after the Chappa conquered south Vietnam. The Philippines in contrast is more genetically unified.

Plus they're communists...

Filipinos should be laughing at Vietnamese, not the other way around.

You have to learn more about Vietnam's history.
Our King Ngo Quyen washed out chinese invaders from 938 AD and got independence for Vietnam, and then our King Dinh Tien Hoang declared state with name Dai Co Viet.:coffee:

The Filipinos had to fight hard for their independence. Non one will gave you a damn free independence if you don't fight back, particularly it's about whose white-man colonialists.

No one said that Vietnamese are richer than Filipinos in term of GDP per capita, we just in the process of reconstructing our nation.
Do you know how it look like when total amount of bombs had been dropped by the U.S on a tiny state called Vietnam was as equal as the total amount of bombs had been dropped in WWII.
Do you know how it look like after the U.S had dropped millions of tons of Orange Agent on the head of Vietnamese people, leave millions of people no be able to function as a human being, and all the medial + social services we have to pay for them every year.

It's true, the time we had to live under imperial and colonial rule was longer than any others, it's because we've got a long and proud history.

The Vietnamese people have our own cultural, institutional system, independent state for thousand years under many name. It's true that the name for our state as "Vietnam" only come under our Nguyen dynasty, the same time as China Qing dynasty.

Vietnam adopted the tributary status from China for thousands of years, not only under the Qing dynasty. Being a Chinese tributary state means nothing other than accepting the Grand term of Chinese Emperor as "the Son of Heaven". We functioned as an independent state, did whatever we want as long as we accept that nominal term. That's all, and it's a nominal term to us.

We are proud of our ancestor, proud of our history. Nothing prevents us from studying history of our ancestors for now.
Let's not just because you don't understand Vietnamese history as long as 100 years ago then you could arbitrary told that Vietnamese people knew nothing about our history further than 100 years ago.
