While the whole world has already given more than 200 million US dollars to help the victims of the super typhoon Haiyan(Yolanda), the Department of Trade and Industry(DTI) of the Philippines is doing a 'Diskwento Caravan' - selling goods to the typhoon victims in low prices.
According to the news reported by the GMA network, the DTI has been selling some basic goods like bread, coffee, milk, and processed meat to the people of Tacloban City who was recently devastated by the super typhoon Haiyan. It was mentioned that the DTI is selling these goods in 10% to 30% less than the original price in the market. The people of Tacloban City were left no choice but to grab this little opportunity because, as they stated, they might die in hunger if they will just depend on the 'little' amount of food donations being distributed by the Philippine government.
This fact is VERY DISAPPOINTING and VERY FRUSTRATING since the whole world knew that the donations for the Filipino people were overflowing since day one after the typhoon. While the government of other countries have been thoughtfully giving great amount of help to the Filipino people affected by the typhoon, the government of the Philippines seems to be unwilling to help its own people.

Kindly check ur story. No misinformation pls. The Diskwento Caravan of DTI is an effort towards establishing a semblance of normalcy in the ravaged area, to perk up local economy. It was making some basic goods available at a discount by the manufacturers themselves, sparing the people frm travelling to as far as cebu for what we may see as a simple grocery work.

re: more than $200M, FYI to the author, foreign gov't have just stated their pledges but no money is yet in the hands of the phil. govt. I appreciate more the goods and services that other int'l gov't have sent to the Phil. it is indeed a physical and obvious help but pledges are nothing..

It's not the government selling goods and those companies selling goods might have donated already a lot and this is their way to continue helping.

The selling of goods is about perishable goods locally produced by private enteties,how you organise a baker to bake xxxxxxamount of bread? who pay's and when? same with butcher. Milk is imported from NZ AUS GER, what about the exporter/importers pay? And what about eggs, butter, cooking oil? And use their money only for McDonald and Icecream? I believe the selling is to counter probable exhorbitant prices...

You guys have to realized that these victims lost EVERYTHING! That's the reason other countries are sending and donating their hard earned money for the victims to at survived! besides most of those victims probably don't have the money. Selling goods to the them is just plain stupid! The government should be guilty of doing such thing!
