MANILA (UPDATE) - The Philippines will not join naval drills in the disputed South China Sea, Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana said Thursday, amid calls to push back against Beijing's activities in the area.

In an interview, Lorenzana said the Philippines skipped South China Sea naval drills with the United States and other countries last year so as not to antagonize China, with which President Rodrigo Duterte forged friendlier relations.

"The main reason why we did not participate in the exercises in the South China Sea with the US and all the allies is because we didn’t have equipment to match what they are doing there. We have frigates but they’re not armed, we have ships but they’re not also armed," he said in an interview on ANC's Headstart.

Disagree, is actually the opposite, it seems like most ASEAN leaders are trying to avoid war or drag into war. Saw some interviews with an ASEAN documentary, they say US-China are on the trajectory for a hot war. The common ASEAN consensus is to bring US-China to the table under ASEAN leadership.

None of the ASEAN members want to see or get dragged into that rivalry hence they will not be doing any military drills in the SCS or hosting US military forces. Most dont want war just like China obviously doesnt but some have to or opt to court the US regime with lipservice and handwaving for economic and political favors or the reverse to avoid bullying against themself by the US regime. Ok we may be naive but not stupid. If the PLA is mobilizing then a military alliance is around the corner. That is always the case in the past wars with China, no matter royalist, capitalist or communist.
