PH gov’t urged to set aside differences with China
Feb 19, 2015
China is a big source of opportunity for more businesses, income, and jobs, and the country would not want to miss that, the leader of the Filipino-Chinese business community says

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino-Chinese businessmen urged the government to set aside its differences with China regarding the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) and avoid missed opportunities for the country.
“The Chinese are getting rich and starting to travel. Chinese tourists are very rich and love to spend money so it’s a good opportunity to get more businesses, income, and create jobs,” said Dr. Alfonso Siy, president of the Federation of Filipino-Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Incorporated (FFCCCII).
By setting aside differences, Siy meant to maintain the status quo.

He pointed out that the country has already filed a case with the Hague-based Arbitral Tribunal over the West Philippine Sea, and counseled against further antagonizing China through the media. This could lead to more misunderstandings, he said.

Dwarfed by China in terms of military strength, the Philippines filed a case against China in March last year, to end decades of alleged bullying by the rising superpower. China has refused to take part in the arbitration.
“Let’s face it, it’s not easy to fight a big country, why sacrifice for something that we can avoid if possible?” Siy pointed out. “Like for example, the light rail system is one of the most economical and feasible systems which they (China) can always help us with, almost for free,” Siy said.

Also, the Metro Rail Transit line 3 (MRT3) capacity expansion project is set to acquire 48 brand new trains that was awarded to CNR Dalian Locomotive and Rolling Stock Company of China.
Getting China to help the country on big transportation systems like MRT3, as they have done with other Asian countries, would do wonders for the economy by alleviating the traffic situation, he added.
Good for business

Despite the territorial dispute with China, Siy appreciated the Aquino administration’s efforts in instilling new confidence to the economy through its good governance and transparency initiatives.
Siy also pointed out that the Filipino-Chinese community plays a large role in the country’s economy.
“I would venture to say that the majority of the Philippine economy, especially in small and medium enterprises (SMEs), are being managed by Chinese-Filipinos,” and added about 70% of them run SMEs in the country.

Speaking at the sidelines of a dialogue on security between the Filipino-Chinese community and the government, hosted by Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary Mar Roxas on February 17, Siy said, “It’s very good. Peace and order is always a good engine for business growth.”

Sure if china stops all illegal activities and respect our EZZ why not but sadly its not the case besides china is not the only nation we have trade with we have a long list countries to go to and china is not even our largest trading partner plus china should know we have billions of investments in china compare to the laughable 500m investments of china here again china is not a lost to us. It would be far better if china pulls out it will allow our own local economy to grow since no more illegal chinese grabage products going in plus no more illegal drugs or organized crime etc. so i see more good then bad yes there is a bad effect but that can be fill in by out other trading partners.

Interesting article about how Vietnam tricked Philippines out of the Southwest Cay. Are they stupid or something?

Southwest Cay is in the northern edge of the Spratly group. It is withinDangerous Groundin theSouth China Seawhich also contains the Filipino-occupiedNortheast Cay(Parola), South Vietnamese-occupied South Reef and unoccupied North Reef. Southwest Cay and Northeast Cay are just 1.75 miles (2.82 km) away from each other. Each island can actually see the other within their respective horizons.

The incident took place when all the Filipino soldiers guarding the island of Pugad left to attend to the birthday party of their commanding officer who was based on nearby Parola. The storm that day is also believed to have persuaded all the soldiers to regroup temporarily on Parola. A report also came out saying that South Vietnamese officials managed to send **********s to the birthday party to lure the Filipino soldiers guarding Pugad. It was said to be a "present" to the Filipino commander for his birthday and as a move of South Vietnamese forces to befriend all Filipino soldiers guarding the Spratlys. Filipino soldiers did not expect that South Vietnam would resort to foul play since both the Philippines and South Vietnam, together with the United States, were allies in theVietnam War. This tactic is believed to be the reason why South Vietnamese forces knew that the Filipino soldiers left the island, an action that is usually kept confidential.

After the party and after the weather cleared out, the returning soldiers were surprised that a company of South Vietnamese soldiers were already in the island. The South Vietnamese flag replaced the Filipino flag flying on the pole created by Filipino soldiers themselves. The soldiers returned to Parola immediately for fear that Parola would be the next target. After higher-ups of the Philippines were informed about the situation, they instructed the troops based in Parola and Pagasa to stay on red alert status. For the following mornings, the only thing the Filipino soldiers could do in Parola was to "curse" while South Vietnamese sang their national anthem.Malacañangofficials, who did not want to compromise the alliance while the Vietnam War was still being fought, decided to remain silent.

1975 - Vietnam reunification[edit]
A few months later, the recently unified Vietnam (after North Vietnam successfully won over South Vietnam, the North Vietnam task force won and occupied the island) decided to remove all remaining South Vietnamese troops in the Spratly Islands and establish military control among the features. It was reported that dozens of South Vietnamese soldiers in Southwest Cay (Song Tử Tây) swam all the way to Northeast Cay (Parola) just to avoid being captured by North Vietnamese forces. It was then when Malacañang officials, headed by PresidentFerdinand Marcos, discussed how the Philippines would reclaim the island. It had been apparent that most of the officials, who considered the North Vietnamese communists to be a threat to Filipino national security, wanted to attack Southwest Cay (Pugad) to reclaim it. However, after an intelligence report came stating that the unified Vietnam had already built a huge concrete garrison within a few weeks, the officials dropped the plan and tried to resolve the issue diplomatically. However, this approach eventually died along the process making Southwest Cay (Song Tử Tây) a Vietnamese-occupied island up to this day. This incident was confirmed in interviews with soldiers involved in an episode of the defunctMagandang Gabi, BayanofABS-CBN.
