What's new

Petrol increased by PKR 30 to PKR 209.9

. .
Petrol raised 60Rs, electricity units increased 47%, gas increased 45%.

The price should go up or down according to global prices without ANY subsidies. No government in Pakistan can afford them currently.

.
Another 20-30 Rs price hike coming our way by 15th June. Get ready!

Well there is a caveat with that too, I had a discussion with @niaz on this too.

You could leave it all to the market to decide, but then the cartelization of the free market is a real possibility. In the absence of a strong regulator like the US or other countries, you will see collusion and price gouging. And we all know how weak the regulators are in this country.

In Pakistan, PSO is a state owned company, so it can sell the fuel at the actual rates, and private companies will be forced to sell it at that too...but there is great room to manipulate the pricing structure in that as well.

But I agree, principally, it should be market determined, and not regulated.

Is ko to chorain, we are perhaps the only country in this world where sugarcane price is determined by the govt but sugar price is determined by the market. You have the cost of production regulated, but the sale price determined by the market.
Not really though/ most things you can refer to international prices to see if there is in fact collusion or not- there is on a few things like sugar btw (for some reason, that’s a golden calf because of who runs that cartel)

What is your opinion about it? Can the Pakistan government afford this? :what:

The inability of this government and their handlers to understand and look at the larger issue here is the problem.

We are at a point where we just can not bear financing costs any more.

Gas prices increased, gas not available. Electricity price increased, electricity shortage. Fuel prices increased as well. This means industry would shrink, profit margins will reduce, exports will shrink because our product cost would be uncompetitive in the global market. Already textile plants closing. Businessmen screaming that they are unable to fulfil their orders at this cost of energy + dollar hike, all costing/budgeting gone out of the park. Even a rubber flip flop is made in China & imported to Pakistan these days as it costs more to produce locally. For a country which can not even manufacture bata shoes in house, how will it compete for other more technical things in the world?

Production & export shrinkage would mean lesser dollars coming in to the country. Wheat price hike global and fuel increase global would mean out import bill would increase regardless of attempts to stop unnecessary imports. This would widen the gap between import & export, upsetting current account deficit and forcing Pakistan to demand for a bigger bail out package.

The bigger bail out package would then again come with requirements to increase tariffs on gas, electricity, fuel. Hence this cycle is killing the economy. The handlers opted for this experiment at the worst possible time. Pakistan could have afforded some subsidies had the previous government continued. Political stability and continuity of polices is very important for any business. Unfortunately this foreign intervention, along with Mir Sadiq & Jafir and greed of our politicians has destroyed any progress that we made in past 3.5 years. Thankless country, thankless people. Bastard politicians & same for establishment now.

Average salary offered to a newbie in Pakistan for someone who has done masters from an average university is 25,000-30,000 Rs. Fuel is 209.86/ Liter. If someone consumes 1.5 liter petrol everyday for commuting to & form work and do daily chores that's 314.79 every day or - 9,443.7 every month. Which means there is 15,556 Rs left for the month, 518.5 per day. That's not even enough to cover rent for 2 shaggy rooms.

Hence the dilemma, why was this experiment done? Why establishment could not use their brain? They should have rather pushed for a 20 year fixed economic policy plan, agreed by all stake holders & political parties to help Pakistan navigate through these globally & domestically challenging times.

This is clearly signs of selling the nation down the drain bidding the process of the enemy. They have come to destroy the nation. 😐
