Challenges Sharifs to reveal loans record; says more scams to unfold in coming days
By our correspondent
LAHORE: PML-Qs Central Leader Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi has presented clearance certificates of various banks before the media, claiming he and his family had neither defaulted on any bank loan nor got it written off. He threw a challenge to the Sharifs to tell the public how many loans they had got written off or he would expose them with evidence.
Addressing a press conference at his residence here on Sunday, Pervaiz said he had set the precedent and now the Sharifs and other politicians should follow suit.
We have presented everything before the media and now the Sharif family should present certificates from banks, including that of the National Bank, Pervaiz Elahi said and added he would wait for their response.
The PML-Q leader said even bigger scams would unfold in the coming days and huge money laundering case would be one of them, and those related to the safe passage given under the National Reconciliation Ordinance. He said he and his family had proven that they had a clean record, as they neither got any loan written off nor defaulted on any of them. He said he also wanted the Sharif brothers to clear their position by presenting bank clearance certificates. He alleged the Sharif family had eaten up the entire loan of the National Bank Limited and got it written off afterwards. He said the media had already run stories on the Hudebia Mills.
When asked whether he was targeting the Sharif family in the money laundering scam, Pervaiz responded he would unfold things in the coming days with evidence but it would be better for the Sharifs to make everything clear before the media by themselves.
He alleged it had become a fashion among politicians to defame their colleagues. He said his family had never been involved in mudslinging but since the Sharif brothers were bent upon maligning his family, they would also not be spared. He said he was giving some time to Sharif brothers to clear themselves; otherwise, he would invite the media to his residence for seven consecutive days and provide them with a new scam of their family with evidence each day.
Pervaiz challenged the credibility of the bank loan defaulters list published in the media, claiming it contained names of only the opponents of the Sharif family while surprisingly missing the names of the Sharifs, who were major defaulters.
He presented before the media copies of clearance certificates issued by the NBP on Oct 29, 2007, the Allied Bank Limited (Oct 20, 2007), HBL (Oct 31, 2007), MCB (Dec 18, 2007), Bank Al-Falah Limited (June 28, 2007), UBL (May 8, 2004), the Bankers Equity Ltd (Dec 10, 2007), Bankers Equity Ltd (March 18, 2007) and NBP (Nov 30, 2004).
Responding to another query on the Bank of Punjab scam, the PML-Q leader said they had neither any account in the BoP nor had they received any loan from it. He claimed his government had identified the scam and referred the matter to NAB authorities so there was no question of their involvement in it.
He further alleged Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif had bankrupted the province and claimed the treasury was empty while the chief minister was claiming that he would construct hospitals in the NWFP and Balochistan.
Pervaiz said he had predicted at his previous press conference that the PML-N would make the Punjab bankrupt, which has proven correct. He said the province was on the verge of economic collapse as it was under heavy debt of Rs 150 billion and paying interest of Rs 5 billion each month. He said it was a failure of the government that assets of the province had been put up for auction. He said the Sharif family brought out the bank loan lists to divert attention of the public from its failures in the Punjab.
The PML-Q leader said the PML-N was playing the role of a friendly opposition while the PML-Q was unmasking the wrongdoings of the government. He said the PML-N and the PPP were allies and they were staging drama to divert public attention.
