So you are as rich as Vietnam in per capita? Just see Hanoi at a glance and then see BD and then tell me if they are look similar. Dont give the accumulated wealth BS.
If you were at $2700 the country wouldnt look so shambolic.
I visited Dhaka after a few years hiatus in 2019. Even after a few years changes were visible and "shambolic" was not how I'd describe them. Like I said before, you have to visit. The situation is the same like how Bangkok was, before they built their MRT and Freeways.
Part of the other reason Dhaka looks more "shambolic" than other cities is the influx of many semi and low skilled low-income people from around the country and even from outside our borders because of the various apparel factories within the city which were allowed to be set up as a strategic mistake earlier in the past decades. This introduces slums and unwanted population density who cannot be supported by city services because they are unable to pay for them.
If one takes away these slum dwellers outside of Dhaka with jobs in SEZs a process already in motion, then population density will be easily halved. The only reason they are in the city is because of unskilled jobs, and those will be moved to the SEZ's or with construction jobs outside of Dhaka soon, as intra-city mega projects slowly reduce soon.
Many of my own friends going to visit Dhaka after even three years described the many changes taking place. New construction with new towers, the expansion of the city to all directions. These changes would not take place if there was no money, income or exports. I have documented these in the urban development thread and the sticky infra and economic development thread - take a look some time.
The only minus I saw in my last visit was bad traffic snarls, which are about to get a respite because of upcoming projects like Expressways, MRT (first of six lines going live soon), BRT and a slew of other measures like regular Bus route harmonization. There are all sorts of construction projects going on, and construction naturally does not look good.
Again - you have to visit yourself. YT videos and images give no idea.
