People of Telangana Region Demanding Seperate State

India to form new southern state

India's government has said it plans to allow a new state to be created from part of southern Andhra Pradesh state.

Home Minister P Chidambaram said the process of forming the state of Telangana would begin soon.

Campaigners for a Telangana state say the region has long been neglected. One of their leaders has ended a hunger strike. His supporters are celebrating.

But 70 state assembly members are resigning in protest, which observers say could lead to a political crisis.

The legislators, mostly from to the state's governing Congress party, said they were not consulted by the federal government before it decided to form the new state.

Two members of India's national parliament with seats in Andhra Pradesh - one a Congress party member and the other from the state's opposition Telugu Desam Party - have also handed in their resignations.

The demand for separate state status for the underdeveloped and drought-prone Telangana region dates back 50 years.

You could be right. Apologies for the error. i may have mistaken this group for one of the dozens of other insurgencies/seperatist groups active in the country. Show the minister the new Angus Beef sandwich they are offering at McDonalds; may make him end his hunger strike :D

and just to add-on to that...most of your separatists listed on wiki atleast are organisations demanding for separate states "within India"
i have clarified this in every other thread that talks about the "1000000s of separatist movements in India"...
this is a fine example...

There should be no separate state for telangana as there are other movements which are picking up in other areas across India which is dangerous.:taz:

The decision of a separate state came too early and with out considering the opinion of all the people across Andhra and GOI has fallen to the pressure of KCR's fast with out considering majority people.

Now, GJM to start indefinite fast for Gorkhaland state:disagree:
SILIGURI (West Bengal):The Gorkha Janamukti Morcha (GJM) announced an indefinite hunger strike for a separate Gorkhaland state Thursday, a day after the central government conceded the demand for Telangana to be carved out of Andhra Pradesh.
The hunger strike for a Gorkhaland state to be carved out of some northern parts of West Bengal would be held in Darjeeling district's three hill subdivisions and the plains of Siliguri.
"Twenty-one youth activists will be on indefinite hunger strike in Darjeeling, Kurseong and Kalimpong and Siliguri till we get Gorkhaland," GJM general secretary Roshan Giri said.
Giri also announced a four-day shutdown in the area Dec 14-17.
Besides, the GJM activists will take out massive rallies in the hills from Thursday, he said. Home minister P. Chidambaram Wednesday night gave the green signal for a separate Telangana state, following widespread protests in Andhra Pradesh and the deteriorating health condition of Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao who had been on a fast-unto-death for 11 days.

State of India: Everyone want their share

Centre's move to create India's 29th state - Telengana - has set off a chain reaction with many more groups now wanting their own states.

Dormant statehood movements have been rekindled and this may change the political landscape of the country.

The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha says it will now launch an agitation for Gorkhaland while the Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh demands the separate state of Harit Pradesh.

CNN-IBN show Face The Nation debated: Andhra to be split – will it open a Pandora's Box?

On the panel of experts to debate the issue were MP and Congress Spokesperson Manish Tewari, chief of Rashtriya Lok Dal Ajit Singh and senior journalist and supporter of Gorkhaland agitation Swaraj Thapa.

Making a state(ment)

Did Home Minister P Chidambaram make a tactical error when he said that the Government will initiate a process for a resolution in the Andhra Assembly for a separate state for Telangana?

To which Manish Tewari said, "No, the Home Minister has not landed himself in any soup. After all the demand for Telangana is not new. It is a four-decade old demand. Eventually it had to come to the talking table and the process had to commence. When a decision is taken, there is momentary agitation but then everything will settle down."

Is the Congress now willing to rethink the whole question of linguistic organisation of states? This is because Andhra Pradesh outside the Hindi-speaking region was the first linguistically organised state. Now we see a demand for a state not on linguistic lines but on culturally-divided lines.

Explaining the history of statehoods in the country, Tewari said, "If we look at this historically after the general reorganisation of states on a linguistic basis you saw the trifurcation of Punjab into Haryana and Himachal Pradesh in 1966. And then you had the next reorganisation when Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand were carved out of Madhya Pradesh and Bihar respectively. Then Uttaranchal emerged out of Uttar Pradesh. So decisions have been taken according to circumstances. And each demand has to be evaluated according to the context of special circumstances."

However, when Ajit Singh was asked why Harit Pradesh should be formed he reasoned, "I have been asking for the reorganisation of Uttar Pradesh. UP is the sixth largest state in the world by population. People have to travel upto 700 kilometers to just reach the state secretariat. Do you think development is possible like this? If Harit Prdaesh is formed it will be the same size as Rajasthan and will be bigger than Kerala. Governance is difficult when the size of the state is big."
