US is doing a good job of parenting India as if US cares about India. But such finesse to manipulate India by stirring tension and creating mistrust, though appearing too direct and apparent to work, has popped up at quite a high frequency especially when US is meshed up in financial crisis while China is trotting ahead. On the contrast, with much less propaganda aiming to influence China's attitude and policy towards its neighbors, this phenomenon present us two possible scenarios worth consideration. Since if US's propaganda towards India were as futile as what they've done to China, it would be reasonable to expect about the same amount of propaganda towards both.
The first scenario is that the Indian government is to some extent easily susceptible to Western influence. India, after hundreds of years of colonization under the British, became the world's largest democratic country, exalted by the Westerners as one of democratic samples in Asia; whilst China is still ranked by the Westerners as authoritarian. Such ideological demarcation generates some kind of affinity of the Westerners to the Indians and vice versa, which would reasonably facilitate mutual influence. Another factor is that, English being a prevalent language in India, many Indian elitists in the government have been westernized and thus tend to grant credibility to west propaganda.
The second possibility is that India's intelligence on China is restricted or incomplete so it has to count on US's information, which apparently would be much more complete and detailed than what India can acquire. But this remains just a speculation as none of such claims would stand tenable.
But these two possibilities should not be viewed separate and independent; they might be intertwined. Lack of intelligence could lead the India government to take as reference the foreign intelligence, which grants western government some kind of maneuverability; affinity between them is conducive to credence granted to the western intelligence.
