Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) has decided to crackdown on illegal Indian satellite dishes and content on Pakistani television channels and cable networks.

“Pemra will take strict action against all those TV Channels which have been continually violating the code of conduct,” Chairman Pemra Absar Alam said while addressing a press conference in Islamabad on Wednesday. “Only license-holder TV channels can telecast foreign content and Pakistani TV channels can air Indian content with less than 6% of total air time, starting October 15, 2016.” Any additional airtime for Indian or foreign content on local TV channels will result in legal action from Pemra, he added.

Alam informed that the measure being taken was intended to curb use of illegal Indian satellite dishes in Pakistan. “I urge the people to stop using illegal Indian dishes as it is in utter violation of the law and against the national interest.” He urged the Pakistani television channels and cable operators to voluntarily follow the set rules and regulations, failing which punitive action will be taken.

In response to a question, the chairman said that Pemra will get assistance from the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), intelligence agencies and local police to effectively keep check on those violating the law.”The FIA will also be approached to ensure that the business of illegal Indian dishes is banned,” he added.

Alam said Pemra will write letters to chief ministers of the provinces and the Chairman Federal Bureau of Revenue on the matter. “Pemra has granted 45 days to the industry to stop illegal Indian content.” He informed the regulator will launch its own Direct to Home (DTH) television system by October this year.

Not possible. Has been tried in the past and failed miserably. And in addition it is good for Pakistan to get exposure to progressive, liberal and productive Indian culture.

PEMRA to ban 'illegal' Indian content on TV channels

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has decided to launch a crackdown against illegal Indian satellite dishes and illegal Indian content on satellite television channels, and cable networks.

While addressing a press conference on Wednesday at the PEMRA headquarters, PEMRA Chairman Absar Alam announced that the authority would ensure that the satellite channels adhere to six minutes per hour limit of Indian content in future.

He asked the administration of television channels and cable operators to voluntarily follow the rule adopted during Musharraf government, otherwise punitive action would be taken from October 15.

The punitive action would start from fines and may include suspension and revocation of the licence after repeated violations, he said.

A strategy has been devised to control the import, sale, purchase and use of illegal Indian satellite dishes in the country, he added.

The PEMRA chairman requested the general public to the stop use of illegal Indian dishes as it was a violation of the law and against the national interests. He said the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), intelligence agencies and local police would help implementing the strategy against this illegal practice adding that FIA would also be approached for ensuring that the business of illegal Indian dishes is banned.

The PEMRA would write letters to the chief ministers of all the provinces and chairman of Federal Bureau of Revenue (FBR) in this regard, he said.

Alam said that 45 days were given to the industry to stop showing illegal Indian content so that they can adjust their business in time.

The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority would launch its own direct to home (DTH) television system by October this year, he said.

He expressed disappointment over the attitude of the anchor persons of the media, who did not do any programme over the Indian atrocities in occupied Kashmir adding that the Indian forces are using deadly pellet guns in the occupied Kashmir, but none of our news channels has done any talk show to condemn the Kashmiris' genocide at the hands of Indian troops in the occupied valley.

The PEMRA was planning to take action against morning shows violating code of conduct, he said. The PEMRA banned reenactment of crime-related incidents, but some channels took a stay order; however, PEMRA has devised a strategy to get the stay vacated, he added.

Really where they always portray a submissive role for a woman and divorce is shown as the worst thing a woman can do?
And a good woman is suppose to be a housewife who stays in the home and be a maid for her inlaws?

. . .
Will they search each and every house in Pakistan? Because there is no other way PEMRA can know people are using Indian DTHs.

Where's the freedom of choice here ?? If people i mean literally we are talking about millions want to see a channel why disrupt ?? why deny ??

Good step. The 6% should be ideally brought down to Zero.

Kudos to Pakistani producers for further improving the standard of our own drama production by so much that now our dramas are being watched in India. I've personally seen Pakistanis now preferring Pakistani dramas over Indian, more and more.

Moreover, since the last few years, I've seen many cable operators reducing the number of Indian channels from their list of channels. I am sharing this based on personal observation of several areas in Karachi only.
