Sharjeel Khan is set to return to top-flight cricket by the end of the year. The update comes after he met the PCB and both parties agreed on a roadmap for his return following, for the first time since he was banned, Sharjeel offering an "unconditional apology" for "irresponsible conduct that brought embarrassment to everyone" and asking for forgiveness.

Sharjeel did not specifically address what he was apologising for, even evading repeated media enquiries on the matter after his statement had been submitted. But it appeared enough of an admission of guilt for the PCB, which announced that Sharjeel's suspended sentence would be waived and he would undergo complete rehabilitation to allow him to reintegrate into the game.

Addressing reporters outside Gaddafi Stadium on Monday, Sharjeel said, "I offer my unconditional apology to the Pakistan Cricket Board, my team-mates, fans and family for the irresponsible conduct that brought embarrassment to everyone. I request for forgiveness and assure I will show more responsibility in my future actions.

"I remind all cricketers to strictly and religiously follow the PCB Anti-Corruption Code as breaching it will only earn momentary gains but the consequences will be severe and last for rest of the career. I have agreed on the future course of action with the PCB, including helping it in its education sessions on anti-corruption. I will soon return to club cricket but will not rush into domestic cricket as I have been away for nearly 30 months and need time to reclaim my fitness and form."

According to a PCB statement, the rehabilitation includes attending and delivering lectures on the PCB anti-corruption code, as well as visits to orphanages as part of his social responsibility, before he takes part in "integration sessions" with the national squad.

Sharjeel, 29, was banned in 2017 from all forms of cricket for his role in the spot-fixing scandal that marred the PSL's second edition. On the opening night, Sharjeel and Khalid Latif, playing for Islamabad United, were charged with five major breaches of the PCB's anti-corruption code and were found guilty on all five counts by a three-man tribunal. Sharjeel was handed the minimum mandatory punishment on each of his charges. Latif received a five-year ban, with no chance of a waiver before the period ended.

Whether Sharjeel's suspended sentence would be waived was in doubt as recently as last week, when, with his ban set to expire, the player appeared not to have admitted his guilt, shown remorse for his actions, or taken part in any rehabilitation programmes.

During his ban, Sharjeel maintained his innocence and denied all charges, appealing against the ban before an independent arbitrator, and then in court, only to have it rejected. Since then he has been weighing his options, and finally chose to write to PCB chairman Ehsan Mani, requesting him to use his discretion to waive the remainder of the ban.

That appears to have been accepted, with the statement from the cricketer a part of the deal. The PCB also confirmed that the rehabilitation and reintegration would run side-by-side. It represents something of a departure from norm, where reintegration into cricket only becomes possible after the player has completed his rehab, but the PCB's stance has softened in the wake of Sharjeel's apology.

Lt Col (R) Asif Mahmood, director of the PCB's security and anti-corruption unit, said, "We met Sharjeel today in which he showed remorse and regret for his actions. The PCB never takes pride in penalising its players, but it has a non-negotiable and zero-tolerance approach to matters relating to corruption.

"I hope this serves as a reminder to all those who think they can get away with violating rules as the PCB is vigilant and committed to eliminate the menace of corruption from the game."

he ruined his career like amir. if he plays like the way he used to he has a chance to become part of the odi and t20 team.he is better then both fakhar and parchi.

.
Shrjeel's previous interviews are there where he claimed that he has done nothing wrong but accepted to meet some notorious people which he later on not reported to team management. However it's better that he gave a vague apology to save his career. He lost so much during the process and was unfortunate for country. PCB should educate the new comers regarding strict anti corruption rules of PCB and ICC.

PCB cannot find any young talent that they are desperate to bring all culprit back in national team..What message we are sending? Do match fixing, make apology and get back in team again

.
Good Decision.. now send Sharjeel and Fakhar as an opener batsman..

What waqar, waseem did in their times?

Usual pakistani system, facilitating corrupts. Even proven corrupts get 1st class jail an all facilities a common man doesn't have in their home, while a poor thief is beaten to death.
I know a person in PDMA personally. He did corruption of around 5 crore rupees (was not in a high rank position). NAB started investigation and he accepted plea bargain. He paid 80 laakh to NAB and now is free. He told me that the remaining 4.2 crore are enough for his whole life and started business with it.
So a win win situation for corrupts.

On the other hand, a PhD scholar, who couldnt complete his PhD because of many issues, is being harrassed by HEC, the university and even NAB. He is smart and talented n still does his research but NAB thinks Pakistan is destroyed because of scholars like him but its ok to give plea bargains to big looters. What a country.

Mate I am more concern about present than what happened in the past ..If wrong practices were existed in the past then we should not continue them in present ..Sharjeel is not some top class batsman which cannot be replaced ..people like him because of his aggressive batting but his stats are just average and I dont think he will do any miracle for us if come back in team

The point was: if the current heads were corrupt in past, what do you expect will take place under them now..

No he is not. An average player with 30's average is not in anyway better then high 40's average batsman. Both fakhar and Parchi are the top batsman with high averages. Just if someone can swing wild doesnt make him a good batsman. Its guys like you who have made malik, hafeez and Shahid afridi superstars and Pak cricket has suffered big time because of that.

According to guys like you, a player who scores 20 runs in 18 balls with a big six and 2 fours is better then a player who scores 100 of 110 balls.. I DON'T AGREE...

so in your opinion fakhar is a batsman? he receives half of the bouncers on his helmet. and the parchi is not a decent one day player. he is player of the 90s era . such type of coward misbah like batting will give you average of 40s but team will lose most of the matches. during the last series against australia in australia sharjeel and babar were the only batsmen who played well. sharjeel is far better then both these openers in the shorter format of the game. time for fakhar is almost over. now all the bowlers know he cant play bouncers and good length balls swinging away at 4th stump line.

Fakhar, a guy having an average of 45 in ODIs is not a batsman ???
Parchi, having an average of 53 and a strike rate of 80 is not a batsman ????

What do you eat man ? seriously what is there in ur skull. Its not a brain, guaranteed.
The other nations are so blessed that they don't have people like u in their nation, otherwise, players like Amla, Kohli, Root, Faf, williamson and others 90's era player would never had been playing today.. and only tullay would had been selected in the teams...

first learn some manners. if you dont have any then its better to stay quiet. you are the first one in the world who is comparing fakhar and parchi with kohli, root, faf and williamson. playing good at dead wickets against teams like sri lanka, zimbabwe and west indies and improving your average doesnt make them good cricketers. fakhar is a bigger tulla then sharjeel. look at their recent WC performance. poor performance in simple words. parchi made a century against a weak team and improved his average. i know i am banging my head against the wall by replying to a street boy who has no intellect and doesnt know how to talk.

Well i am just telling u the facts,. and i still stand by them. You don't have a brain or you don't bother to use it. And btw Sharjeel never played on Mars, he also played on these dead wickets and still don't have a decent average. Just because he can hit a spectacular shot and then get out doesn't mean that he is the best batsman. And those kohli, faf, AMla, Steve smith, they all are 90's style player but its them that makes the team win the matches and not Afridi like tullas. There is a reason why IK said that we need proper batsman, proper means the one who knows how to play and not just how to swing. And btw Misbah, your so called 90's player was the most respected batsman of Pakistan during his career by the opposition. But he is not a batsman as per your pathetic logic cause he plays like 90's style.

Its after a long time that we have started to get a proper opening stand, otherwise there was a time when your 21'st century kind of opening batsman used to give us a start of 20/3 in 5 overs, or 15/3 or similar numbers and the Inzi, yousaf and younis used to do all the rebuilding.

BTW you don't need to reply coz i am not going to read it.
