PayPal is not Coming to Pakistan: IT Minister

I remember another thread from a few months ago titled paypal coming to Pak and it had tens of pages.
Why this obsession with Paypal? Its nothing special....We have it here and honestly nobody i know uses it...E banking all the way for transfers

Federal Minister for Information Technology and Telecommunication Dr. Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui on Thursday revealed that PayPal is not coming to Pakistan.

The government is still in touch with PayPal as well as looking for other alternatives, said the minister while briefing the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication.

The committee meeting was chaired by Ms. Rubina Khalid here on Thursday.

Secretary IT Marrof Afzal said that internal issues of PayPal were the reason behind the refusal for the company from coming to Pakistan. He said that security and anti-money laundering related laws have been tightened and there is no issue on Pakistan’s part now.

Senator Mohammad Ateeq Sheikh said that the company is not coming to Pakistan due to lack of legal backing.

He further said that PayPal is operating worldwide, and a Pakistani director who is working in the company wants to bring it to Pakistan. However, fearing the entry of money laundering in the system in Pakistan, the company has refused to come to Pakistan.

He proposed that government should provide a sovereign guarantee to PayPal and ask them for coming on Public Private Partnership basis to remove their apprehensions.

The committee observed that due to lack of online money transfer system, the country is losing huge foreign exchange reserves, besides not letting the freelance sector to flourish.

good news.. they shouldn't. I closed down my paypal account after a fraud as $2000 from my US account attached to paypal got vanished. I had two factors authentication enabled. I just checked my US bank account after a long time and I felt my balance slightly lower than I expected. Upon inspection I found, my paypal account had paid $2000 to some strange company over a period of 10 month i.e. $200/month for apparently no reason. Paypal was initially reluctant and denying any scam but later on my threat to use legal action, they deposited $2000 but still have not provided me the reason as to why did it happen? So I removed all my cards and bank accounts from it and I will add payments options only on per transaction basis. Or I may deactivate is altogether since there are so many alternatives.

Really sad. Are they in India, Bangladesh etc ?

In India and Bangladesh since 2017 with local competition provided by many local competitors like PayTm which is Conservatively valued at $20 Billion and personal wealth of Vijay Shekar Paytm founder at $2.6 billion

not in the Bangladesh.

Since 2017

.
Is this true? @VCheng

If it is lobbies it will be Indians inside Paypal.

This is probably just fallout from being on the FATF grey list. Pakistan will need to be off it for companies to consider expanding financial services to the country.

last time @VCheng said Somalia have better banking then pakistan . so now Uganda Congo and many sub Saharan countries even Nepal have better banking system then Pakistan . when we debate it here .

Obviously, Pakistan is the greatest country on Earth for those who do not know what exists in the rest of the world. Of course!

Nopes, paypal is not in Bangladesh. Re-check your source, they announced it but due to differences between government the plan didn't go through. And yes the announcement was in 2017 but after that nothing, zilch, nada
