Pasha’s retirement a ‘relief’ for United States

New Delhi: The United States breathed a perceptible sigh of relief over the retirement of Pakistan’s top spy Ahmad Shuja Pasha, with whom Washington had a tetchy relationship, with the usual hopeful prognosis accompanying the selection of Lt Gen Zahir-ul Islam as the new chief spook, Indian media quoting US officials reported on Sunday.

The changeover in Pakistan made headlines in America , where the media typically does not bother about similar personnel turnover in the intelligence agencies of Russia, China, the UK, India, France, Israel or any other country.

”But with its toxic distinction of being terrorism central, the changes in Aabpara, the headquarters of Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), attracted much attention in the US media” TOI quoted in its column.

It even generated questions at briefings in the White House and at the state department, where spokesman Victoria Nuland offered a thinly disguised brush-off to the spymasters of a country informally regarded as using terrorism as a policy tool.

Asked about Lt Gen Islam, Nuland said she preferred to "send you to our colleagues in the intelligence agencies who will be his counterparts". "I can’t speak to this individual. I can’t speak to that relationship. It’s an intelligence-to-intelligence relationship, so I’m going to send you to our friends there," Nuland said when pressed about whether the move will change US-Pakistan ties.

White House officials too declined to comment immediately and said they will need to get back on the matter. One report noted that Pasha’s departure would be "a relief to the US intelligence community which had a working, if frosty, relationship with him".

Privately, though, some officials fell back on usual expressions of hope after discovering that Lt Gen Islam, in the course of his career, had traveled to the US to participate in militia.

i hope insallah the nest ISI chief is even more pro pakistan then pasha that will teach the Americans a lesson

. .
Under the given circumstances, the new chief had to be least influence-able by any foreign elements. USA had seen Gen. Pasha but they still have to see Zahir-ul-Islam. Have faith :pakistan:
you know Zaheer ul islam?
if yes then please tell us some thing more about him

He is an able-commander but senior officers of Pakistan Army (with over 25 years of experience) have said that he is not "sharp" enough to lead ISI. His intellect and decision making ability is weaker than Lt. Gen. Pasha. :/

Well, we should wait for some time to make any solid comment about new DG.

If this is the case tht he is not "sharp" enough to lead ISI, why was he chosen as DG ISI? Even if Gen Pasha did not want to get another extension, there were some other options also...infact few other names alongwith him, came in the media as potential candidates...why wasnt anyone else, chosen? DG ISI is an extremely challenging position, esp. in these critical times...In these times, person with weak decision making ability as DG ISI doesnt make sense at all...Why wasnt anyone else chosen? Or it might be the case, tht Gen Pasha was exceptionally and extra ordinarily brilliant? I would like to trust Gen Kiyani's ability to select the right person for the right job...bcoz he was the one, who also chose Gen Pasha...so hopefully this time, also, he would have made the right choice....I hope so..Lets hope for the best..

Yeah right, Pashay ne kya ukhaar lia tha CIA ka?

Recap -

Post Mumbai attacks - failure
Lack of espionage charge on Raymond Davis - failure
CIA operatives flooding Pakistan - failure
Shakil Afridi - failure
Finding Osama Bin Laden - failure
Preventing CIA ops in Abottabad - failure

Pretty sure there is some blame on him for the number of drone attacks against us.

Former ISI chief turned COAS, Kayani is still there and when you add his failures to this the list becomes a book.

is this anything to link with reopening ground military nato supplies ?

Funny thing is .. he was reported to be upset on how the Army "isnt what it used to be"..
son roams around in a BMW X5.. wonder what he is missing??

If his decision making ability is not good, He will consult others officers in making a better decision for Pakistan, unlike Gen Musharaf, who had a good decision making power and that's why made most of the decision after 9/11 on his own,,,
