ISLAMABAD: Chief Justice (CJ) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry stated that there was no need to pass a law regarding the voting rights of overseas Pakistanis in upcoming elections, Express News reported on Friday.
CJ was hearing a petition on granting voting rights to overseas Pakistanis. An advocate for the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) argued that change in the legislation is important to enable overseas Pakistani to vote.
Earlier on February 14, the Supreme Court directed the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to make relevant efforts to ensure that overseas Pakistanis are made an integral part of the country’s electoral and voting system through the implementation of voter registration procedures and the establishment of voting facilities at Pakistani missions overseas.
CJ remarked, “Changes in law are necessary if we want an act in our own country, we do not need laws to make something happen outside Pakistan.”
Justice Azmat Saeed said, “When there’s a will, there is a way. But election commission has faulty intentions.”
“If there is a legislation regarding increase in salaries then it gets approved within fifteen minutes,” stated Justice Khilji Arif. He was speaking in reference to election commission’s reluctance to include overseas Pakistanis in the election process.
Chief Justice further questioned, “If registered overseas Pakistanis’ do not cast votes then how can elections be free and fair.” He further said that participating in elections should not be a compulsion but Pakistani citizens should be encouraged to participate.
The hearing was adjourned till February 27.

Enabling overseas Pakistanis to vote would mean more involvement and funds from them to invest in Pakistan.

Good step.

Overseas Pakistani's are more than just cash cows, though I agree giving them this fundamental right will provide more ownership and encourage a more inclusive relationship which ultimately lead to more investment. The greatest concern for overseas Pakistani's is security - of both life and investment.

What to do when your intentions are good but every one from the Patwari, to SHO, to DCO, to TMO to all various governmental offices you come in contact to are corrupt and want to skin you. People hear of someone from abroad with wealth and there are kidnappings for ransom take place. All the while the people who need to help you in the time of need, i.e MPA/MNA's well theyre too busy lining their own pockets so everything falls on deaf ears.

Some times in Pakistan even your own family doesn't spare you. so what to do? Do you give up or increase the rights of overseas Pakistanis?

Edit- P.S yes Imran Khan and PTI have been at the forefront to bring this about - kudos to them now PTI supporters should also take heed - If you listen to his Lahore and Karachi mega Jalsa's you'll hear him specifically mention he'll protect the rights of overseas Pakistani's.

Come on don't joke with us. We (Oversea Pakistanis) run away from Embassy work since these guys don't treat us good, nor try to minimize the process. And He is talking about going for polls again to get embarrassed. Our own people treat us bad and yet we blame the world for not respecting us.

I don't see any party coming out and supporting the overseas Pakistanis except PTI.

I fully support PTI in this.
