For the year 2009,both India's Pakistan's defence spending were almost the same,as %GDP

China and now Pakistan citing India's increased defence budget as their reason. though Pakistan has done it many times earlier, this is new for China. China is understandable as they has rapid economic growth. Now our defence budget stand 1.8% of GDP. Lower than most of the countries.

18 per cent increase in Pakistan’s defence budget approved

Islamabad, April 8(ANI): Pakistan's National Assembly Committee on Defence has approved the proposal for an 18 per cent hike in the country's defence budget for the next fiscal year.

With this raise, the total budget will come up to 521.6 billion rupees from 442 billion rupees allocated last year.

"The recommendations to raise the defence budget were given keeping in view the requirements due to the ongoing war on terror," The Express Tribune quoted committee chairperson Azra Fazal Pechuho, as telling reporters outside the Parliament House.

The committee was briefed about the requirements of the army by concerned officials, and sought a significant raise in the defence budget for the current and the next fiscal year.

Talking to media persons after the meeting, Azra said defence requirements of the armed forces were reviewed at length during the meeting and approval had been accorded for an increase by 18 percent in the defence budget for the upcoming fiscal year in the wake of growing inflation.

Azra told journalists that 25 per cent of the defence budget was spent on the purchase of defence equipment and that the needs of the army had increased due to the war against terrorism.

"Therefore, the decision has been taken to enhance the defence budget," she added.

I'm sorry how is this news??? We wouldn't comparing Portugal's defence budget to India's (9th) (Portugal's is just slightly more (34th) than Pakistan's (35th) defence budget but 2.0% of GDP) Pakistan is just unlucky enough to be located next to India and stupid enough to state their sole aim is crushing India, as such they have been (as the saying goes, almost literally lol) "writing checks (their rhetoric against India) that they can't pay (much smaller economy)"

It would be news if Pakistan's defence budget was MORE than India's but it just isn't and now that India is sustaining close to two digit growth and Pakistan is what it is, the situation will NEVER change.

Where did you learn that the sole aim of Pak millitary is to crush india. Pakistan can hardly maintian a defensive posture due to a huge spending gap between India and Pakistan.

It could be true but it (%) is very misleading. It's the actual numbers which count. Indian economy being 8/10 times larger than Pakistan economy, Pakistan only spends one tenth of what India spends on defence.

PAKISTAN IS BIGGEST VICTIM OF MISMANAGEMENT.

If your policymakers would have the foresight and sound knowledge of management :

you would not have waged and lost wars...

your country wouldn't have been dismembered,

your economy wouldn't have been ruined and

your political system wouldn't have been in shambles.....

Pakistan has never made silly goals such as what you state "crushing India" etc. etc.

Pakistan will maintain the spend on military preparedness based on the threat perception from India. Your saying otherwise will not change the fact when the entire IAF Western Command and close to 30+ divisions are focused on Pakistan-centric operations.

As far as the spend is concerned, Pakistan can sustain 2% or potentially even 3% of the GDP being spent on the military to retain our security options with regards to India. Unlike the Soviets, Pakistan is not going to spend itself into a default. We have other options which prevent us from having to take that disastrous route. What that leaves us with is to have enough conventional capability to blunt Indian aggression (in case we have to deal with Cold Start) to buy time and avoid a nuclear conflagration. The former is within Pakistan's capability and also financially doable.

Lastly, Pakistan's economic growth happens in spurts and won't stay challenged in the foreseeable future. From 04 up until 2025, Pakistan will spend significant money on defence without going broke and without having to spend like Israel and some of the other Middle Eastern countries.
