Pakistan and Russia recently signed a landmark defence deal for the purchase of Mi-35M (NATO reporting name Hind-E) helicopters — a versatile helicopter gunship with troop carrying capabilities.

The Mi-35M is a comprehensive upgrade of the Mi-24V, and brings to the battlefield a whole range of capabilities. Produced by Rostvertol, a subsidiary of Russian Helicopters, it is offered as an export variant of the Mi-24.

Primarily designed for attack missions, and a secondary capability enabling military transport missions, the helicopter delivers superior flight performance characteristics and manoeuvrability when compared to its predecessors.

The famous Mi-24, made its name by instilling the fear of God in every adversary that faced it on the battlefield. It is also easy and cheap to maintain, a critical consideration for combat aircraft.

Flying tank
The export version, which Pakistan will be acquiring, incorporates several improvements over the earlier Mi-24 models.

The cockpit and vital components are protected by titanium armour, part of the reason the Hind series is referred to as the ‘flying tank’. It has new main rotors with a better aerodynamic profile. A new X-shaped tail rotor has also been incorporated, replacing the earlier three-blade rotor. The characteristic stub wings of the Hind have been shortened, but still retain their ability to carry large amounts of rockets and guided missiles.

Avionics have also received a major update with the new export model of the Hind. The cockpit is now night vision capable, with new and improved Multi Functional Displays (MFD). The sensor package has received a major upgrade too, giving the helicopter the ability to engage in combat operations at any time of the day, in all weather conditions.

The turboshaft engines have been improved and are now more powerful, making the Mi-35 perfectly suitable for operations in our tribal areas and other high altitude areas of operation.

Reach out and touch a ‘friend’
Let’s face it — the Mi-35 is a combat helicopter primarily, with transport duties a secondary function. The helicopter can carry a wide range of weaponry which includes anti-tank guided missiles, unguided rocket pods, short range air to air missiles, gun pods and free fall bombs.

As the Mi-35 was built to destroy enemy armoured vehicles and anything else that was unfortunate enough to come in its way, it is armed with Ataka or the older Shturm anti-tank guided missiles.

The Ataka has a range of up to 8 kilometres, hence giving it the perfect ability to reach out and touch a ‘friend’. It can also carry 80 80mm rockets or 20 122mm rockets. The Hind-E also has a twin-barrelled 23mm gun, and one has to be extremely unlucky to be on the receiving end of the gun.

Excellent choice for Pakistan
The Mi-35 will be an excellent addition to the attack helicopter fleet flown by Pakistan Army Aviation.

With ageing AH-1 Cobras, Army Aviation was in need for more modern combat helicopters. Although only four Mi-35s have been ordered, they will form the backbone of a more modern attack helicopter wing, and the possibility always exist for further orders in the future.

The troop carrying ability of the Hind-E can also be used in a number of ways. For one, the helicopter can be used to insert Special Service Group (SSG) personnel onto dominating heights in our current areas of operation, from where they can provide vital surveillance on surrounding areas or provide covering fire to other elements manoeuvring in the valleys below.

Indian reservations that the acquisition of the Mi-35 will alter the balance of power in the region are absurd, for a country that has recently worked out the acquisition of AH-64 Apache gunships from the US; four helicopters will not make a difference in the larger scheme of things.

On the other hand, Pakistan will benefit greatly, and Army Aviation will have sharpened its talons further.

Did you write this or was it copy pasted

I agree that this will not cause any discomfort in India,
If you guys were acquiring the far more capable Mi28 then somebody in the MODI Govt would have threatened the Russians with cancellation of PAKFA/FGFA order which is the only foreign fighter we will acquire at least till 2035, when replacement for the Mirage 2000 would be sort

Mi-35 is very much capable for the role it has to perform in ANF and Army. For machines like Mi28, Pakistan will never go for Russian shop.
Regarding threats, NO one can threaten them. Indian govt did try that while Pakistan was purchasing T-80 UD from Ukraine. Russians could have easily stopped them but they hadn't. Next, JF-17 is going to be back bone of PAF, their engines are coming from Russia.
Even if India withdraws funds for PAKFA/FGFA programs, it will not affect Russia. Program will continue. China is there to fund the program, and more effectively than India.

Let's clear it.
Hind is not here to serve as front line gunship,
It's not replacing cobras. Viper will replace existing fleet of Cobra along with WZ10,.....
Mi35 will be used by special forces .......

Rather you should apply some to your sensitive parts, after T-80 UDs, RD-93 and now MI-35. Also I can help you in burnol application on your body if you want.

Is not it Insult to Islam?? the picture convey that "The Cap Muslim wear on head, Modi is covering his back. Or may be ity look like some one is cleaning his "sh!t" by the cap?

If some Indian would have posted it, he would have banned .. please remove it...

PLease stay on topic rather than abusing Prime minister of a Country...

It is Insult to Hind.. Hind is far superior than Cobra.. Hind is heavy attack helo, it can carry more firepower.. Pakistan must use Hind as front line gunship...

One Query, Will this Hind will be equivalent to SuperHind MKIII??

Pakistan should increase the order to at least 12 helicopters. Only 4 helicopters are not good enough to fulfill our needs.

Why Russia can't sell weapons to Pakistan while India turns for USA in the international weapon market.

Russian never turn down handy money, they will not care how India feel. Politics is only interests. Anyway we loose the competition, we shall make it better next time.

just a few noob questions

1.what is the type/version of Mi-35 Pakistan is getting ?

2.how much in numbers pakistan is buying and how much it intends to buy ?

3.what is the flight cieling of Mi-35 pakistan is getting from russia ?

4.and what is the price per heli and what are there terms of payment ?

no trolling , no name calling just simple debate on facts and figures thanks in advance

A very good thread with debatable topic gone to waste thanks to Indians.

If anyone posted an off topic comment especially can Pakistan afford it or stupid things like that, he will be directly thrown out.

And same warning for Pak members, don't bring in India, just talk about the capabilities of the heli with respect to Pak requirements.

Role of Cobras and MI-35 are different. Cobras can hide themselves behind treetops whereas Hind-Es are designated to heli drop the troops while providing them air cover and CAS. I think Hind-Es will not be placed against batteries protected armor advance. Cobras and Z-10s are there for anti-tank role.

the lesson india learnt during kargil was that you need a light and highly manuvarable attack helli on such hights 15K feet while all varients of Mi-35 loose there steam after 10-12K feet so in short Mi-35 is great asset for palains and desert warfare but is big liabilty on high altitude warfare and its more of a special ops support helli than a dedicated attack heli and for the same russians made KA-52 and Mi-26 so pakistan needs more vipers and Z-10s than heavy and bulky Mi-35s which are very much ineffective to the latest gen of MANPADS

Absolutely agreed, Mi35 would be mainly used for dropping SSG in counter insurgency operations !!!

I got it from reliable sources (Offtopic)

"No Su-35 For Pakistan"

Russian deputy chief of mission (Embassy) in New Delhi denied plans to sell Su-35s to Pakistan.

In an Interview with the Minister-Counsellor and Deputy Chief of Mission of the Russian Embassy Mr Denis Alipov, he in reply to the question said "I would also like to respond to the idle talk and pure invention of the media by reiterating that Russia has not discussed and does not have any plans to sell Su-35 aircraft to Pakistan."

Reportedly many news agencies have reported in recent times about Pakistan getting Su35, according to Russia, it is just an overstated hyphenated case by media. Russia has assured that it will not do anything detrimental to security of India.

How true is it??

Though it is not official yet.. I got this in morning..
