Turkey has a history with Russia. Both have fought 14 wars before the Ottoman Empire broke down with Russia winning 12 and Turkey 2. Russia had a hand in breaking up of the Ottoman Empire. Both Turkey and Russia still remember what each of them had done to the other.

Russia has been showing restraint till now vis-a-vis Turkey. Even after Russia helped Erdogan with intelligence to overcome the military coup attempt, Turkey downed Russian jet killing Russian personnel in Syria. Russia refrained from reacting. Russia gave S-400 to Turkey. Russia also restrained itself from entering full-scale in the Azerbaijan-Armenian war when Turkey was actively supporting Azerbaijan.

Turkey, which is training Afghan National Army personnel on its soil which are at war with Afghan Taliban has aspirations of having Turk military presence in Afghanistan. Russia does not want that, so much so that it stopped Afghan Taliban from attending peace conference arranged by Turkey.

Erdogan has openly spoken against Taliban while Taliban has warned Turkey/Erdogan to stay away from Afghanistan.

So, the purpose of this topic is to have a serious discussion on:

1) Do you guys also think that Afghanistan can once again become a playground for two old enemies, this time, Turkey and Russia?

2) What should be Pakistan's stand?

Turkish presence in Afghanistan violates the Doha agreement.

Russia has her limitations and objectives, that why they sold S-400 to Turkey. Otherwise they have been diddly dadling Iran for years.

Pakistan's stance should be straightforward, and like Imran Khan put it best in two points.

1. Pakistan wants peace and agreement in Afghanistan.

2. Pakistan wants, and has, nothing do with the conflict in Afghanistan anymore.

Sorry to say but what a dumb and simplistic way of looking at history and deducing intentions. More than Russia, it was britian, france and others who destroyed ottoman empire, shouldn't they be bigger enemies by ur logic? Turkey doesn't have love for ANA but was there as part of NATO. If US and NATO accept taliban as a legitimate party then why wont Turkey? Ideologically the akp should be more closer to taliban than the communists. And lastly Russia will stop taliban from attending a conference?? This is dumb and hilarious. Please avoid topics u have no idea about.

Turkey is door for Russian trade. turkey is only player which can help Russia to do its trade with world. If Russia pass by Afghanistan n reach to warm water. Which will reduce Russian dependence on turkey. So nato will make sure that Russia will have easy ride

I respect your views.

Explain the statement by Erdogan on Taliban:

ISTANBUL, July 19 (Reuters) - Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that the Taliban should "end the occupation of their brothers' soil", and played down a warning from the militant group of consequences if Turkish troops remain in Afghanistan to run Kabul airport.

The Taliban ruled Afghanistan with an iron fist from 1996 to 2001 and have fought for 20 years to topple the Western-backed government in Kabul and reimpose Islamic rule. They are making a fresh push now to gain territory as foreign forces pull out.

"(The Taliban) need to end the occupation of their brothers' soil and show the world that peace is prevailing in Afghanistan right away," Erdogan told reporters before leaving for a trip to northern Cyprus.

He said the Taliban's approach was not the way that Muslims should deal with each other.

Also explain, why is Erdogan adamant on having Turkish troops presence in Kabul despite Taliban not wanting it ?

As for whether Russia is in favour or Turkey's presence in Kabul (as a NATO member), let us wait for things to come at the forefront in mainstream media.
