High mortality rate.
From the Newspaper | 6 hours ago

ACCORDING to sources, Pakistan has the eighth highest newborn mortality rate in the world in line with countries such as Somalia, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc.

Unfortunately in our country one in 10 children dies before reaching the age of five, and half of them die within the first month of life. This is indeed alarming and a challenge in achieving the Millennium Development Goal that aims at reducing child mortality by two-thirds by 2015.

Main reasons behind the said alarming mortality rates are the lack of resources, lack of the utilisation of available resources, lack of training facilities in emergency care and in neonatal care and proper engagement of the community.

There is, therefore, a need that as part of improvements in facility-based care the staff should be trained in emergency obstetric care and in neonatal care, the local and available resources be properly utilised and community awareness programmes
be expanded to the grossroots level in both urban and rural areas so that they could handle newborn and maternal cases from communities.

If we are able to address the said causes of death in newborns, we can avoid up to 70 per cent of all newborn deaths.

But this is not possible as long as collective efforts are not made by health departments in collaboration with civil society organisations, keeping in view the best interest of the child.
