The other day I took a look at the current sex ratios (male/female) in the world, after watching a horrible piece on how selective abortion is still very popular in India. I knew Pakistan's ratio is bad, and it still continues to be so, as seen in the following links;
Pakistan rank 18 1.06 males to 1 female.
Pakistan rank 177 1.05 males to 1 female
ISLAMABAD: The provisional results of the 6th Population and Housing Census 2017 point out to the fact that men in Pakistan are in larger quantity than women.
According to the press release of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, the number of men in the country stand at 106,449,322 while the number of women are 101,314,780. The total population of Pakistan stands at 207,774,520. Meanwhile, there are 10,418 transgenders in Pakistan.
The underlying reasons for this are a few, and I'm taking some of the research already done on this by Hina Sheikh, one of the country's development economists.
Apparently, no female enumerators were hired even in the most conservative regions where the census was conducted. This must have not only affected estimates of the sex ratio, but also violated the instructions of Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), which stipulate that women would be appointed as enumerators and supervisors for the census (Hina Sheikh)
This has a strong link with the highest sex ratio is in Balochistan (110) but not the Islamabad Capital Territory (111). Punjab (103) has the best stats, which again explains the link to social conservatism.
Maternal mortality drives up women’s death rates. According to the United Nations Population Fund, for every 100,000 women 178 die from complications with childbirth in Pakistan because of poor access to health facilities (Hina Sheikh)
The gender imbalance also remains higher in cities than in rural areas. A higher urban sex ratio shows an intense migration of men to cities in search of employment. Because their families are left behind in rural villages, men also make up a disproportionately large share of the urban census count (Hina Sheikh).
Maternity care needs improving, as we lose so many of our women to child birth.
The point about the cities is accurate, considering the census participation was far higher in the cities, driven by a growing young male population who have come for work.
Social scientists are also beginning to detect a trend of sex-selective practices at birth in Pakistan. This is not to say that the practice of sex selection is widespread, although female infanticide, despite having declined in recent years, remains common. A deep-rooted preference for sons over daughters is pervasive in Pakistan, as is in India (though not with the same intensity) (Hina Sheikh)
So sex selection does exist, which happens to be one of the most erroneous crimes in Islam.
The Quran clearly states the evil mindset of such people.
“And when the girl-child who was buried alive is asked. Upon what sin was she killed for.” [Surah al-Takweer, Verses 8-9]
“And when one among of them receives the glad tidings of a daughter, his face turns black for the day, and he remains seething . Hiding from the people because of the evil of the tidings; “Will he keep her with disgrace, or bury her beneath the earth?”; pay heed! Very evil is the judgment they impose!” [Surah al-Nahl, Verse 58-59]
Our Prophet (saws) who had girls ( son died in infancy) praised female children and the blessings they bring.
The Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) of Islam made Paradise the recompense of every father who conducts himself well with his daughters, has patience in raising them, provides their moral education, and observes Allah’s commands concerning them until they come of age or until his . The Prophet (blessings and peace be upon him) made the place of the father in Paradise next to him. Hadrat Anas reported that the Messenger of Allah SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam said,
“Whoever brings up two girls till they reach the age of puberty, he and I will come on the Day of Resurrection like this,” (and he joined his blessed fingers.)
“When a boy is born, then he brings one Noor (light) and when a girl is born, then she brings two Noors.”
“If parents are kind and generous towards their daughters, then they will be so close to Him (The Holy Prophet Peace and Blessings of Allah be Upon Him) in Jannah, like one finger is to the next.”
“The person who is faced with hardship due to his daughters, and makes Sabr (is patient), then his daughters will be a Pardah (curtain) between him and the Hell-fire.”
Hadrat Ibn ‘Abbas reported that the Messenger of Allah SallAllahu Alaihi wa Sallam said,
“…and whoever brings up three daughters or a like number of sisters, training them well and showing kindness to them till Allah enriches them (i.e. till they reach the age of puberty), Allah will guarantee Paradise for him.” A man asked: “O Messenger of Allah! Does this apply to two also?” He said: “even to two.” If they had asked whether to one also, the Messenger of Allah would have said that, “even to one…”
Sayyiduna Ibn ‘Abbas (Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu) recounted,
“Whoever had a female who was not buried nor insulted by him, and had not preferred his male children to her, Allah admits him to Paradise.”
“One who loves his daughters and withstands the hardship of grooming and getting them married, Almighty Allah makes Jannah compulsory (Waajib) on him and keeps him protected from the Fire of Hell.”
“They will be a shield for him from the Fire.”
“Whenever you buy anything from the market place first present it to your female children then to your male children.”
“Daughters are a gift from Almighty Allah. Those parents who are kind towards them, then Almighty Allah is generous towards such parents. Those who are merciful to their daughters, Almighty Allah is Merciful towards them.”
“When a girl is born to a family, then between the parents and Hell, there shall be a distance of five hundred years.”
It has been stated that:
When parents rejoice at the birth of a daughter, this is greater than making Tawaaf of the Kaaba seventy times .
When Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal (Radi Allahu Ta’ala Anhu) would hear that one of his relatives or friends had a baby girl, he would say to them,
“Congratulations for the Prophets were mostly fathers of daughters.”
It's the duty of every male in Pakistan and beyond (expats) that our fairer sex survives and thrives. They are the carriers of our civilisation and nation through their wombs, and go on to form the nucleus of a family's development, and contribute with their own skills to the economy.
Although there are explanations for the skewed data, the fact remains that females can be seen as lesser folk, something in direct violation of our faith, which is ironic considering how proud of being Muslim the vast majority of Pakistanis are. Evils such as selective abortion should be destroyed, what do these parents think will happen when their beloved sons grow up? Sit around on their hinds for an available woman to marry, have little chance of meeting the opposite sex, resulting in society coming to a standstill.
Anyway, I don't want us pointing at others whilst we do little to remedy the situation.
Inshallah things are getting better, but we all need to be aware of how bad things are currently.
