Pakistan was growing ginger already, this is for a new variety. Nothing to blame on dictators or politics, mostly related to economics of crop and geography.

Senator Dr. Sania Nishtar -Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection has inaugurated the first-ever ginger cultivation in the Ginger Harvest Workshop conducted in the Balkasar area of Chakwal, Punjab.

As per the news release, this was the first ginger crop piloted in Pakistan. The crop was developed in 11 months. As an important constituent of Pakistani cuisine, ginger is highly demanded but unluckily, it is not cultivated here, and all the crop is imported to meet domestic needs.
During the event, experts created awareness among the partakers regarding the bearable production and management of ginger and in what way to appropriately harvest the crop.

While adressing on the occasion, Dr Sania said: “Ginger can emerge as a major crop and can be a game-changer for the farming community. Agriculture is profoundly linked to poverty alleviation in Pakistan. Government, private sector, research institutions, innovators, and farmers can work together to build synergies and develop agri-value chains. This will lead to greater impact for poverty alleviation, livelihoods creation, economic growth, and foreign trade boosting.”

Besides, the occasion was also attended by Chairman Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) Dr. Ghulam Muhammad Ali, Director Vegetable Research Institute, Faisalabad Muhammad Najeebullah, and other experts.
Information regarding the technique for successful growth and harvest of ginger in the country was given to the Participants.
Moreover, specialists gave research-based information about the agricultural advantages of producing ginger locally. Later, all participants visited the field for the official inauguration and demonstrations.
Chairman PARC informed Dr. Sania on the accomplishment of the ginger farming plan and its potential to increase Pakistan’s farming sector. “This variety of ginger has been successfully grown and field-tested and can yield up to approximately 8 to 10 tonnes per acre in this area,” he said.
With the help of sprinklers, drip irrigation, and shading fabric, it is the first ginger cultivation project that cast out commercially successful.
This is not first ever ginger harvest, it's first harvest of a new variety. Headline is giving wrong impression and is incorrect.

How could Pakistan lose the ability to grow ginger ?
Extremely surprising that so far no ginger was grown in Pakistan. Tell me that there is something wrong with this news. I mean, its not some exotic crop
Ginger cultivation map of India. I am sure the soil and climatic conditions in Punjab, J&K and Western UP are not very different from those in Pakistan. Moreover you can see that it is grown in every state, which means it is not a big deal to grow it! Ok, quality may differ, but doesn't mean it won't grow at all.

Hopefully that will bring down the price of ginger in the local market. Specially in the districts near chakwal as the transport costs will be less. But this is pakistan who knows after sugar mafia there will be a new ginger mafia.

. . . . .
I am gobsmacked. All Asians have been growing ginger for centauries, I grew up in Africa and African farmers had been growing ginger there for decades.
How could Pakistan lose the ability to grow ginger ?
we used to be one of biggest producers of cotton, now there is no cotton anymore, textiles have to import it.

.
All will be wasted if we don't get IK/PTI for another term. PMLN and PPP will destroy what's left.

lol
Please don't worry, I love Imran khan, although I support no party. But Pakistan will be fine, no matter who's in-charge. Pakistan has achieved a lot already, but obviously there's a long and a hard journey ahead.

Don't be silly, Pakistan is still one of the biggest cotton producing countries in the world. The production has gone down a bit, because the farmers are growing other crops, and cotton consumption has gone up.

Please do not reach for lazy conclusions, it creates a wrong impression.

Some stats from planning commission report

Overwhelming majority of what Pakistan imports (ginger) is from china not india

Do you know a hectare is 2.47 acre. Thats less than 700 acres.

Does that represent a commercial agriculture application in a country like Pakistan? You much be joking bro.

122 tons in an area of 700 acres. This happens when some random farmer grows ginger probably mixed with other crops. Not commercial agriculture.

Commercial application is different and with much better yields. 8-10 tons per acre.

This is exactly what the article is implying.
