We didn't actually got them upgraded. We got them as they are from Italy, NATO stocks.

No they are not upgraded. the italian m109l are just italian built m109 in surplus picked up on the cheap.

But a much needed upgrade is needed to keep them up to date otherwise they will be like the Ukranian 122mm SP which are ancient.

Not all of them, many are still M109A2 standard with some minor modernizations.

The M109L already has a few upgrades over the standard M109A2 it’s based off, including a different gun and GCS system, I’d rate in in between an M109A2 and an M109A5.

The rest should keep in mind that PA has already purchased SH-15, that’s their current modern SP arty, they don’t need to upgrade the M109s much anymore as they would rather invest more in SH-15s while the M109s stay the backbone due to their large number, these guns are still very potent.

here is a question for the wise, what upgrade options are out there? what nation can offer upgrades to these old guns?

Pakistan can most likely upgrade them itself if it wants, the things HIT and other companies are already making for the AK and VT4 are far more complicated than some basic upgrades for M109s, the issue is that it would basically require new R&D from scratch that takes a lot of money, so they’re Likely reluctant to do so, instead they’d rather spend the money buying new SH15s, which also makes sense.

Here is the thing The upgrade would need to make it up to date with latest standards. so upgrades from the powerpack + transmission. what nations can offer the powerpack + transmission upgrades?

The barrel from 39cal to hopefully a 52cal as it will extend the range.
The comms inside will need to be upgraded if not already.
The various computers and sensors that accompany in the firing of the gun and hitting the target accurately.
The loading mechanism in the much newer M109 has a newer and much better autolader and rammer.

If a solution can be acquired which can bring it upto a decent standard then its all well. otherwise these M109 are rapidly becoming museum pieces.

There is a reason why nations are phasing out M109's and replacing them with Korean K9's. SH15 is a good addition but tracked SPH are still in demand and with the war in Ukraine its become urgent. There is a reason why PA got both SH15 and more surplus M109's

The Pakistani 155 mm albeit towed or semi mobile is already in serial production. Hopefully we will see them during the March 23 parade. The SP will follow soon.
