The rank of Field Martial once given means the person never officially retires.

A Field Martial officially serves as long as he/she is alive.

In a country with a history of coup's where the Military has ruled as much as Civilians have, its downright foolish to give the title Field Martial to anyone.

In India, the title Field Martial has been given after a Service Chief has rendered 'exceptional' service to the Nation...i.e much beyond what ordinary Chief's(such as they may be called) have achieved.

Well you are correct in saying Pakistan has a history of Military rule but that was permitted under the rules at that time. However now the Constitution is much more clear about when and how Military would be called in and who has the authority to call so that no Military Coupe can take place.

Rank of Marshal, Field Marshal and 5-star general is an honour bestowed upon military leaders as a reward for extra ordinary service to the country. We are fighting an existential war and should Gen Raheel Sharif succeed in ridding the country of all forms for terrorism that is; ethnic, sectarian, linguistic & the target killing; he would surely deserve it.

However, in my opinion; this rank would only be worth its name if it is granted thru a resolution of the National Assembly. Else it would be just a joke as it was in the case of Ayyub Khan

I dont think its true...... Nawaz Sharif, no matter how comfortable is with Gen Raheel Sharif right now, will never give him this title, tht further empowers him..... Remember numerous articles, before gen kiyani's end of sec term...tht Gen kiyani might be promoted to CJCSC or he might be designated as Amb to US or some other post?... And then ISPR had to eventually release a statement tht Gen Kiyani is retiring and seeking no further position... Those articles sort of created a bad blood and through those articles, it was given the impression, tht Gen Kiyani himself wants furtherr extension or some other post..but all tht was put to rest eventually through ISPR release....
As far as I understand Nawaz sharif... Gen Raheel is becoming exteremely popular and is becoming too popular for Nawaz sharf's liking....So i think Nawaz Sharif and his cabinet ministers wil definitely float this idea through press leaks deliberately and will try to give the impression tht maybe Gen Raheel Sharf wants this title, and Nawaz sharf is considering it... Although Nawaz Sharif will be deliberately leaking this and floating the idea, they will try to give impression tht ISPR through its friends in media, are floating this idea.... So he will try to make gen raheel sharif controversial tht he is seeking this title....from Nawaz sharif..just like through numerous articles before gen kiyanis end of sec term, he tried to make Gen Kiyani more controversial..
So, in my opinion, i dont think Gen Raheel sharif should accept this title, even if he is offered..and outrightly reject it.... If he accepts it..he will only become more controversial like Gen kiyani, when he accepted first extension.....Gen Raheel as it is , very popular and need no further rank........i think, if even one more article comes on this topic, ISPR should really come forward and reject this theory as soon as possible

As far as I know the personality of General Raheel sharef he deserves to be FM. He can steer this nation from all challenges we are facing today. He is proactive, bold, decisive and know what is good for us. I am 100% sure his devotion and patriotism is higher than anything else you can imagine. He can't tolerate corruption and all things/ people harming this country. I can see complete purification of this country under his leadership especially political dirt , judicial garbage and media snakes.

No, it wasn't permitted.

I recall few years back Gen Kyani uttered the claim that the TTP back was broken and what followed was dreadful.
Gen Sherif has made a similar claim re Army operation brining peace but this can turn on us by carefully planned assassinations and some large scale terrorist incidents.

e seems to be doing the right thing so far and more needs to be done regarding those terrorist outfits that have open political outlets in the society and they openly talked about extermination of minor sects in their rallies against "vulgarities of the Imran/ TuQ sit-ins".
fight is now moving to Karachi as a response to the Pak-China economic agreement. there wont be any time to celebrate and honeymoon period will be over for the 10,000 strong force dedicated to support this corridor. having the proposed 50% special forces personnel in this force shows the severity of the imminent risks, I think the mandate of that force should extend to Karachi as well. Americans should be befriended regarding this development so that they dont join the "affected parties" in the grand scheme of things that are planned for Balochistan and Karachi in the coming months.

this is where Gen saab will shine. because there is a lobby of American senators who are openly entertaining and advocating the breakup of Pakistan and General can only counter that by taking American national security chiefs and Pentagon brass into confidence and explaining them why its a bad idea and being friends will be much better for both countries.

Well the words that protected the Generals was "Abrogate the Constitution" which the Generals did not do infect they suspended the Constitution. Then the Judiciary had to invent the term "Doctrine of Necessity".

Currently the Constitution has been amended so what was done in the past can not be repeated again.

IRIA sources confirm that different circles in Pakistan are holding in-house discussions on an idea to explore the possibility to promote Pakistan armed forces Chief of Staff General Raheel Sharif as a Field Marshal, or a five-star general.

The idea is being under discussion not only within government circle but also by intellectuals and senior journalists.

At a gathering of senior intellectuals, retired bureaucrats and religious figures in Islamabad on April 25, 2015 a senior journalist, Editor-in-Chief of Pakistan Observer Mr. Zahid Malik proposed “as General Raheel Sharif has emerged as a decisive stabilizing factor in Pakistan, therefore, he deserves to be promoted to the rank of Field Marshal”.

The proposal was warmly welcomed by leading Major General (R) Jamshed Ayaz Khan, security expert and writer Major (R) Ikram Sehgal and businessmen including Mian Mehmood, President of Pakistan-Saudi Arabia Joint Chamber of Commerce & Industry.

Sources close to official Government circle privately confirm reports that the idea had little or no opposition in Pakistan particularly in the backdrop of General Raheel Sharif’s refusal to destabilize democracy in Pakistan when “Long March” almost undermined the authority of political government.

Another important reason to justify decoration of Field Marshal to General Raheel Sharif is his lead role in war against terrorism which posed existential threats to Pakistan during 2009-2015.

General Raheel Sharif has successfully commanded Operation “Zarb-e-Azb” and made courageous move to evicted most of the terrorists from North Waziristan.

General Raheel Sharif is also regarded as a game changer with his military and diplomatic approach to turn tension into cooperation. This change was evident vis-a-vis Afghanistan as soon as General Raheel Sharif took office of COAS.

Sources in Pakistan are also arguing that General Raheel Sharif’s contribution to secure the nation from terrorism, neutralization of threats to democracy and reforming game-changer approaches with China, the United States, Russia and Afghanistan are enough reasons to see him as next Field Marshal in Pakistan after a gap of fifty years when the then General Ayub Khan was decorated as Field Marshal in 1965.

Idea promoters reason that Sri Lankan Chief of Defence Staff, Sarath Fonseka was recently promoted to the rank of Field Marshal for his contribution against terrorism while General Raheel Sharif has many features to his success list.

Here is my take on this.

Many of us do suffer from the disease of hero worship to put mildly (though idol worship is more appropriate here).

Why do I say this?

I admire Gen. Rahil Sharif as a soldier and officer. My contacts (family and friends) who work(ed) with him talk highly of his professionalism and no-nonsense approach towards military matters.

However I despise worshiping him. Why? A few reasons!

* Gen. Sharif is using the systems (training, tools, techniques etc.) put in place by Gen. Kiyani and many others.
* Gen. Sharif's success so far depends on his field commanders in FATA (in particular) and corps commanders in general (throughout the country).


Thanks to Gen. Kiyani, We now have about 25-30 generals (1,2,3 stars) who are the experts in COIN implementation and execution especially in mountainous areas like FATA, and dense urban jungles like Karachi. These leaders will carry on the legacy of Gen. Sharif even if he retires in 18 months or so, even if he retires as a 4 star general.

thus Gen. Sharif should be respected for his leadership, but he should not be promoted to "Field Marshal" based on current situation.

So is it possible to make him 5 star general at all?

The answer is emphatic YES! Here is the justification!

Anarchist groups like Qaida and ISIS and Houthies and Taliban turds are all united in their cause and in their efforts throughout the region.

However the peace-enforcers are split along ethnic and national lines.

This horrible situation is resulting in piecemeal efforts to defeat Taliban, Qaida, ISIS, and Houthies. Sadly we have seen country after country falling to death and destruction in the hands of such anarchists.

At some point peace-enforcement armies of Pakistan, KSA, Gulf, Iran, Turkey must unite to defeat the anarchists and gangs throughout the region.

if such unity comes forth in part or as a whole, in the next 12 months or so, then Gen. Sharif and his assistants will form the best possible team to lead such Allied force in the region.

And yes, in that specific situation, Gen. Rahil will be leading and commanding many 4-stars from different armies. And thus he will automatically deserve to be ranked as 5 star.

And I sure hope that happens sooner than later.

While I admire Gen. Kyani (soldier son of a soldier), he did have some shortcomings that I'll discuss in a separate thread.

However those who are beating drums of Gen. Sharif without thorough analysis are simply idol worshipers, sorry to say.
