Pakistan's acquisition of the U-214

For the benefit of Pakistani members (Indian members know it already) let me briefly inform you about the secret Indian ATV (Advanced Technology Vessel) program.

Indian nuclear program and technology goes further back than Pakistan’s. Bhaba Atomic Research Reactor Centre (BARC) started working in 1954. CIRUS (Canadian Indian Reactor) went critical in 1960. Nuclear fuel processing from the spent fuel was started in the 1964. I was a student in London when the news leaked out. Plutonium obtained from the processing the spent fuel from various reactors was used to conduct first nuclear explosion by India in 1974 at Pokhran.

Special Weapons Research unit has been established at the BARC for quite sometime. Based upon 30 years experience gained at BARC, India launched a secret program to build a nuclear powered submarine in 1983!

It is now 25 years and India is still no way near to manufacturing a safe rugged and long life PWR reactor suitable for use in the naval vessels. Unlike civil power plants, power plants used in naval vessel are not periodically opened and must keep on running safely for the entire life of the vessel; about 20 years. This has forced India to seek nuclear submarines frown Russia,

Understand main problem comes in associate components. Just as designing an aircraft engine ab initio is far more difficult than designing fuselage and wing of the aircraft (India could not produce suitable engine for the LCA), a nuclear reactor requires manufacture of main structure, pipelines and pumps made from Boron Steel. It is so strong that ordinary welding equipment will not affect it. There are thousands of other specialized metallurgy requirements.

Pakistan has a long way to go towards acquiring sufficient expertise. Let us face it; even for our tank we are importing tank engines from Ukraine. TT for Augusta was very basic. We were never given the technology to make MESMA. To put it simply, we have gained experience in putting together a submarine from knocked down components such as assembling a car.

Submarine is a stealth weapon system, normal diesel electric submarines run on battery power when under water; therefore they need to surface ever so often to charge their batteries thru the diesel engine. Once at snorkeling depth these can be spotted and open to attack.

Understand that a submarine such as Augusta will need to surface every 5/6 days. Augusta B with MESMA can keep under water for nearly 3 weeks. Fuel cell technology performs the same task. A nuclear submarine dose not need to surface at all. Only the need to replenish food supplies will cause it to surface. Thus a nuclear sub is very difficult to detect.

Hon PAFAce has correctly pointed out that a nuclear sub is only a platform to launch weapons under water. Having a nuclear submarine does not mean that you become a global power. For that you would need MIRV missiles such as Trident or Poseidon to go with the nuclear sub.

I apologize if I sound like a school master, but I keep seeing posts in various threads about nuclear subs as if it was the end all weapon system.

Worrying development is that the recent India/US agreement for the transfer of advanced technology to produce nuclear power, would also probably provide India with sufficient know how to produce miniature PWR reactors suitable for naval propulsion.

I dont think so
1.the german parliament has recently discussed whether pakistan get u214 cause pakistan has the barbur and nuclear weapons but it was only a show for the pacifists, pakistan get the u214
2. germans and tech tranfer?? :what: perhaps in the design and construction but not the AIP

the deal is already signed months ago.....so it doesnt matter what the left-wing socialist/pacifict nut-cases say

and definately doesnt matter if indians go crying to them ---mad and with fists clenched because we still get defence deals from all over the world.

if indians go crying to them , they would try to sell the same weapons them, the history shows us
at iran-iraq war in the 80s have germans sold arms both sides

the only way out of this circle of doom is self development and produktion !!!

Niaz Sir, just to give an update here. India has manufactured the miniaturized PHWR. The reactor went critical in 2004. This was after a decade of technical and technological problems. They simply were unable to miniaturize the reactor. There was apparently a breakthrough in the technology in India-and thus the reactor was constructed.

The ATV has been constructed almost in entirety in India, with ONLY designs comming from Russia. IIRC the design for the miniaturized reactor itself came from Russia(but i maybe wrong on this, please correct me if i am).
The construction including the R&D for the metallurgy, right down to the screws was done here, which is why it has taken so long.

i agree...but when it comes to ship-building industry we are still in embryonic stages.

By the way, i am in Gölcük (Kocaeli province) now. A family friend in the navy is retired TDK (Navy) official and i went with him and saw Gölcük shipyards from the outside.

çok güzel!!! (zabardast!!)

Can any one confirm the deal with source.

Thanks PAFAce & niaz for the response, i already stated that i'm just a noob in this subject and you people are giving me a lot of usefull informations! so don't worry i'll try to be a good student! :)

.
Our missile program is more than enough for that. Also, if you are looking at threats farther away (Europe or Americas), then an ICBM program will be more within our reach than a nuclear-capable submarine.
sorry for the out topic question...but i would like to know if Pakistan is running any project about ICBM? & we have Shaheen which can be lauched from surface ship but can we launch it from a sub too? i mean if we are capable to do so in future?

Ok , so,
not TOT, only buying. :(
Now tell me one thing, we are expert in French, AUGUSTA, now why we dealing this ?
and
if we can make augusta, then why not "u214" I mean Hull etc,

Hi Mughaljee,

Engineering design is a frame of mind----when building the augusta we learnt to think like the french to.

The difference is that we have learnt to build a CITROEN---in order to build the bmw / mercedez you have start afresh. Doesn't mean that the past experience will not help---but germans are know to do things differently.

Good example from Mastan Khan. German engineering is world-class. If we look back into history, the best weapons were German. Also there is a long list of german inventions..

The first ballistic missile, first cruise missile, first air-to-ground missile, first surface-to-air missile, first jet fighter, first shaped-charged explosive, first use of stealth technology etc all are German.

The german subs were the best subs of World War2 and they employed Radar Absorbing Material (RAM) on the periscope of submarine to reduce the probability of detection by radar.

The best field machine gun was also German. In automobile sector too, german automobiles are second to none.

hand down, no doubt about it.....

When it comes to industry and manufacturing they are simply un-rivalled. They are very intelligent and hard-working people. They say that doing business with Germans is also easiest and most trouble-free. Show them the cash, they give you the merchandise.

Speaking of cash --- have we physically given the cash to the Germans yet for these subs? When will we get them

Hi,

Here is how I look at it----germans are wonderful people----it is preferred to think that people deal with you on good terms and relationships. Money is not everything---just the lackof it creats prolems---indeed the abundance of it makes things easier.

I would request my pakistani colleagues to think a little differently about this issue---and appreciate the assistance from other countries regardless of the money issue or not---it is better to have friends---some may come ot our resuce.

On a personal note---I believe the year is 1974---75---I am travelling up country at that time in TEZGAM in a/c coah. In the morning time, another pasenger in the coah starts talking to me---wanted to know what I was doing---I told him that I was in pre-med. He told me why I don't pursue physics and later on rocket science and technology. On my insistance, he told me that the german were helping the arabs a lot and could help pakistan as well.

I talked to my grandfather about this conversation---not particularly about the german issue but who the person told me he was. Found out that his brother was indeed one of the ministers in Ayub's cabinet as he had stated.

Later on---10--15 years down the road I did find the truth---the germans were indeed helping the arabs alot in the 60's and 70's---but then some of the german scientists started getting neutralized by israelis---the israelis prevailed---the surviving germans withdrew.

MastanKhan,
Abu Zolfiqar

Many thanks for this reply,
just asking one think again,
is this deal with Transfer of Technology or not ?
Please clear this if some one have any news.

always regards
waiting.

Pakistan's 214 Submarines made in Karachi with German help
Pakistan has purchased three German Subs at a cost of $1 Billion. This will go a long way in helping the Navy achieve self-reliance. The key strategy for the Pakistan Navy is diversification and with the German Subs this will be achieved by Pakistan. The German subs are 100% German so there is minimal chance of sanctions. One of the most advanced submarines in the world is the German Type 214 class. Equipped with a fuel cell propulsion system, the Type 214 submarines are the first of only two fuel cell propulsion system equipped submarines, the other being the Russian Lada class submarine.

Newsvine - Pakistan's 214 Submarines made in Karachi with German help

The news is published on 9th March 2009 and its not from "Rupee news", and I feel that after couple of months the project might get start.

This is a big smash on those lobbies who were trying to stop this deal.
