NEW YORK, Jan 22: Saying that “war is not an option” Pakistan’s former ambassador to the United Nations Munir Akram called upon India and Pakistan to restart composite dialogue to resolve the festering Kashmir dispute and tackle the terrorism issue.

Addressing a large audience of Indian and Pakistani diaspora at the Asia Society on Wednesday, Mr Akram said any war between India and Pakistan would be devastating for the region.

It may be mentioned that the former ambassador was forced to withdraw last month from a discussion on the impact of the Mumbai terror attacks on Pakistan-India relations.

Mr Akram said both countries should try to deal with terrorism through the mechanism they had established, with sincere efforts and not with posturing.

There was urgent need to get to the bottom of the problem and to defuse tensions between the two countries, he added.

Conceding that Pakistan had consistently supported the Kashmiri people’s struggle for the right to self-determination, he expounded at length how the liberation struggle had taken shape and referred to several occasions when India backed away as the two countries came close to a settlement.

Unless there was an amicable resolution of the Kashmir dispute, Mr Akram felt that some groups would continue to act in support of the Kashmiri people suffering at the hands of Indian occupation forces.

In the absence of any significant progress towards a final settlement, Pakistan would not be in a position to decisively act against such groups because the cause was too popular. Only a Kashmir settlement could empower Pakistan to finish them off.

He brushed aside a dooms day scenario presented by some elements about Pakistan splitting into four states, Punjab, Sindh, NWFP and Balochistan.

Earlier, Ashutosh Varshaney, professor of Political Science at Brown University, suggested that Islamabad’s anti-India stance was keeping the country united, not Islam, which, he claimed, was dividing Pakistan.

However, he quickly added he did not agree with the right-wing view that Pakistan should be disintegrated to bring about stability in the region.

Reacting to Prof Varshaney’s suggestion that Pakistan was sponsoring terror groups, Mr Akram said that India’s record on this count was tainted.

Terrorism was not a new phenomenon in South Asia, it has existed for decades.

He referred to the Bhindranwale’s Sikh terrorist group which had been created by the Indian intelligence as also the LTTE militants who were now biting back India.

Now, he said, India was involved in destabilising Balochistan, adding the Balochistan Liberation Army was trained and financed by the Indian intelligence and Pakistan had proof of its complicity.

The BLA has been engaged in sabotage activities in the province causing death and destruction.

Nicolas Platt, a former US ambassador to Pakistan and a former president of Asia Society, rejected that disintegration of Pakistan could resolve the problems of terrorism.

He asserted that not such disintegration was on the cards, nor was it in anybody’s interest.

He said the US was not going to act as a mediator but would encourage India and Pakistan to settle their disputes through negotiations.

He said he believed that the aim of the group that carried out deadly attacks in Mumbai was to set India against Pakistan when their relations were improving.

He urged both sides to remain calm and keep the doors of communications open.

Mr Platt praised the restraint shown by India and Pakistan and urged them to stay connected in this difficult period.

Earlier, Ms Vishaka Desai, president of Asia Society told the audience that the organisation would endeavour to hold many more discussions and meetings between various groups of the subcontinent.

She also spoke about a huge contemporary art exhibition from Pakistan scheduled for September of this year.

This article is full of crap. Nobody at this meeting called for the "destruction of Pakistan."

Munir Akram was trying to justify Pakistani terrorism by rebounding and obfuscating the issue to the point where even the moderator Dan Harris (ABC world news) started losing patience. Akram's idiotic arguments may have prompted the audience to laugh at him a couple of times; but nothing more than that. Nobody called for Pakistan's destruction.

Akram also lied about having been "kicked off the panel a day before" the last event. As per the other diplomats and journalists who are affiliated with the UN, Akram has a reputation for being a sleaze ball. Asia Society would have been much better off by having Hussain Haqqani (who was unfortunately not available at the time).

May i ask how does the great one know all of this in such exquisite detail.

To you obviously anyone pushing Pakistan's case would be sleaze.

I have heard Munir Akram speak, he is well read, speaks well and logically and has done great service to Pakistan while he was our ambassador to the UN.

The charge of sleaze (how so? Please do enlighten us) and denying that he was not allowed to speak on the earlier panel is essentially the Indian angle on the story. The last panel was a bash Pakistan fest based on what I have heard. It was essentially an opportunity for the Indian diaspora to went publicly in the US and nothing more. The Pakistani point of view was nowhere to be found during that one-sided discourse.

Look at my earlier post regarding the issue. Pakistani representatives were sought, there were commitment issues on their part, and the format had to be fixed 10 days prior to the event. Akram chose to lie about it. There are many Pakistani representatives who speak at these events, most of them well respected; Akram isn't. I don't know the back story, but the lying certainly brings to light a few critical flaws.

India is tired of Pakistan continuing to pursue its policy of terrorism.
The era of peace is over. India is known to be a resilent and a resposible democracy, the fact was proved by the NSG apprving Indo-US deal despite India NOT being a signatory to NPT.
But Pakistan can no longer test India's patience the world knows that.
History has proved that India has always promoted peace and Pakistan has been actvely taking steps taking advantage of India's peace initiative.
Kargil for instance happened just months after the famous AGra-Summit.
Let it be known to Pakistan, that one more terrorist strike against India eminating from Pakistan is gonna be the end of India's patience.
As the old saying goes "Laato ke bhoot, baaton se nahi maanate".The world will applaud us was taking such action.

24 pc Indians want war with Pak over 26/11

New Delhi: It has been almost two months since the terrorist attacks in Mumbai that shook the entire nation and led to huge public anger against the system.

So what is the mood of the nation on the issue of terror? What do they want the government to do now? How should Pakistan be dealt with?

Now a CNN-IBN-Hindustan Times State of the Nation survey conducted by Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) reveals that only one in every four Indians see war with Pakistan as a solution. The survey was conducted across 882 locations in 18 states.

The public outrage after the Mumbai terror attacks may have died down but is the anger still there and who is it directed against?

When asked to cite the main reason behind repeated terror attacks, 44 per cent of the over 3,000 respondents blamed weak internal security.

While 36 per cent felt that the Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance Government took the right steps during the Mumbai attacks, 31 per cent were of the opinion that the government did not do enough.

Apart from the government, the media's role during the Mumbai attacks has also come in for sharp criticism from some quarters.

But interestingly the survey shows that almost half the respondents feel that the media behaved responsibly and did a good job. Only 19 per cent blamed TV news channels for sensationalising the coverage.

While the Indian government insists that Pakistan's official agencies were behind the terrorist attacks in Mumbai, the opinion of the average Indian on the issue seems to be split down the middle with 33 per cent blaming the Pakistani government for the attacks but an equally high 34 per cent feel that the Pakistani state may have had no control over the attackers.

On the question of how should India should deal with Pakistan, 24 per cent want a military solution, 22 per cent favour a dialogue and 23 per cent want India to put international pressure on it.

About 42 per cent of the respondents oppose the idea of India and Pakistan fighting terror together.

The survey also shows that the Mumbai terrorist attacks seem to have brought Indians closer together. When asked whether religion and terrorism were linked, almost the half the respondents said no.

India is tired of Pakistan continuing...

LOL. Big words for a big-headed all-talk idiot. Dave, I suggest you get off your moral high-horse because India sponsors terrorism in Pakistan and Sri Lanka too. The west sponsors terrorism as well, this is all well-known - if you are unbiased, you will agree.

Pakistan is waiting for all your jingoistic BS to become actions. Until then maybe you should stop threatening Pakistan you TROLL.

Pakistan's military is not stupid enough to start a war with the US over the Afghanistan border.
Likewise, they are not stupid enough to allow India free reign to do what it likes with Pakistan.

BTW Dave, Pakistan is not testing India's patience. India is testing Pakistan's patience. In case you anti-Pakistan trolls don't know it already: the Indian government should be careful with what they say and what they do, or they will start something they cannot finish and they WILL regret it.

The era of peace is over you say? Then Pakistan is waiting for India to make the first move... I for one feel sorry for you guys, you have so much more to lose than Pakistan when you reap the whirlwind.

I think all this talk by India is nothing, it's only purpose is so that the common Indian people (such as yourself) can feel better about yourselves and keep thinking that Indians and India are somehow superior to Pakistanis and Pakistan. I know many Indians well enough to know that only idiots believe it - Indians are a smart people, too bad you trolls are not.
