It's an ancient confluence city of two civilizations.

And a mega city. Hugely in the news (oftentimes for the wrong reasons).

Antique. Historical. Exotic. Violent. In the eye of global politics.

Lahore if you want to push it. Though for me Lahore is just a bigger Pakistani Muslim Amritsar.

Cheers, Doc

Peshawar was a city on the route of the Silk Road, but Lahore is quite multicultural. Forget your thousands of year old Parsi, we have Iranians living there from revolution times. There is a famous Iranian bakery. Karachi has more. You'd think Iranians would feel more comfortable living among Iranic Baluch or Pashtuns, but they are more cosmopolitan than anything else.

Fair point. It does have a rich history from both Aryan civilisations, and this is reflected by it's population (split between Iranics and Indics).

Pretty much lol.

I'm not going to check because I have better things to waste my time on, but I bet there are elements of Dravidian/Elamites in them as well.

The only pure country in the his world is Pakistan.

They not only have Dravidian in them, but also Arab.

By critical mass I mean that once you have a third of the population, no one can oppress you and you have political leverage. Muslims aren't the type that they can just be pushed around when they have numbers. Also since it's a federal system, Muslims could have made their own rules and norms in their own states (i.e., in Bengal and West Pakistan). Not to mention the internal migration would have increased Muslim populations in central India as well and Islam itself would have spread faster in central India than it is doing now. Because right now Islam is considered a negative, whereas then it would have been encouraged by a third of the population who are Muslims. Punjab and Bengal would have been under Muslim rule as a whole because of sheer demographics.

Jinnah's religion during his death is under dispute. Some who knew him say he converted to Sunni and pushed to have his funeral that way, whereas his own family said he was Twelver Shia and tried to do it their own way. Nonetheless, what was his religion during the partition?

Some scholars did indeed support it, which is why it happened. But fact is the centers remained in North India, and till this day Deobandis and Barelwis continue to be the dominant schools of the subcontinent. So there is a literal disconnect of the head from the body.
Maybe maybe not. You and I were not there at the time.

About disconnect from head to body. Islam came via the Persian speaking lands to us. Indeed co-terminous Pakistan was a Persian speaking land until British India. If we were really to re-connect, I would look towards there and not Utter Pradesh. Although many Pakistanis are Depbandis but still not the majority.

Hasina doesn't want Bangabandhu desh, you are illiterate fool.

Jinnah did not get us out of Indian union, we contributed immensely for the creation of Pakistan.
Oops that was harsh... you cant take reality keep living in your bangubando desh.
we are so happy to be apart :)

. . . .
Nonetheless, what was his religion during the partition?

He was a switcher. Born Ismaili, converted to Twelverism, and finally settled on Sunnism. But throughout his life, he acted like he was non-denominational.

Not necessarily. Sindh itself was the original gateway for Islam into the region, and Lahore has always been a seat of Islamic power in the region. Pakistan itself has also been under Muslim influence much longer than the rest of the region, we were even a part of the Ummayad and Abbasid Khilafahs.

He makes mockery of Pakistanis in this speech in Kolkata. He calls Pakistanis "stupid" (Ahammok in Bangla). Says People are dying of hunger but they don't look at it. They are obsessed with Islam , Kashmir and Hindus. He calls Indians as brothers of Bangladeshis.

nice clip from bangbandhu .

Must be a Marri Baloch trying to pass off as a Parsi.

Cheers, Doc

People in this region are mixed in general. You said that my tribe came from Arabs, but ironically I found that from my mother's side of the family most of the names are Irani. My mother and her sisters total to 5 and my mother is the only one with an Arabic name, although I might be wrong about my aunt's names being Irani. I won't share my mother's name, but my khala's names are Shanaz, Shamshad, Shehdan, Shahbana. Father's side all names were Arabic. Except for my father who was the oldest son. He was named Parvez, but once my great grandfather found out he was pissed and had my father's name changed to one of the 99 attributes of Allah swt. So basically an Islamic Arabic name, which set the precedence for the rest of his brothers and sisters to have Arabic names. Shit, even I have a Shia name, but I am what the Iranis like to call a 'wahabi'.

Also there were and are plenty of Irani people that lived/live in Pakistan from modern times. About 8 years ago I met a Persian(I say Persian because she didn't really seem religious by her dressing) lady at a grocery store in the US. I worked at the grocery store part time and she could speak Urdu. She was in her mid-40's. She liked talking to me and would come by just to have a chat. She liked talking to me but apparently hated Pakistanis which I found weird. Later on, I found out from some other Iranis that she used to live in Islamabad, and got played by some Pakistani Shia into sex and promises of marriage for a few years, before realizing she had been tricked.

Can't blame her, but then that isn't the fault of Pakistanis. Guys like that exist everywhere.

I was simply referring to the most widely accepted theory of the Arain people.

Depending on political compulsions, I'm sure there would be others.

My sister and my mother and my dad have post Islam Persian names. Me and my brother have Avestan Persian names.

My wife is post Islam Persian. My kids are two Avestan Persian, one Russian (thanks to a pre marriage pact with the Mrs ...).

Cheers, Doc

Well on my mother's side, we have names that even Iranis today don't use, unless I am misinformed. One of my uncle's name is Khurshid, which I think is pre-Islamic Irani. Another one is Rustam. Ect, ect. I feel like names are just what other people call you. What you identify with yourself is more important.

One of my uncle's is married to a Ukrainian woman. I think you saw him in a photo I posted standing next to my maternal grandfather. My cousin/their son speaks Urdu like a Pashtun or Afghan in terms of accent. His Urdu is actually very good compared to Pakistanis in general, but the accent gets me every time. Even Pashtuns that meet him end up thinking he is one of them.

Yeah, Khurshid/Khorshed is pre Islam Avestan Persian. It means Radiant Sun, originating from the Avestan pre-Mithraic deity Hvare-khshaeta. This is similar to the Slavic deity Hors, introduced to the Slavic people by Persian armies in the first millennium BC.

Names are important. Especially family names.

Parsis lost/gave up their Persian family names for hundreds of years in India, to remain undiscovered by the Muslim invaders. Often taking on post Islamic Persian names and serving in the courts of many Muslim invaders, right under their noses. Speaking fluent Persian.

Our current surnames as you know are barely 300 years old, when we moved to Bombay, and came into the public eye for the first time on a national level as an exotic tribe.

These were quickly adopted by either profession, trade or place of origin. Many taking on more Anglicised ones when they moved abroad to the UK.

Cheers, Doc

nice clip from bangbandhu .

He was India centric politician. For his affection for India he was target of radical people who were extremists by nature and they killed him for his pro-India policies. Sadly the killers were also Bangladeshis for whom he fought against Pakistan.

In this speech he asked Pakistanis why Hindustan would be our enemy? Hindustan is our ally. Indians are our brothers. It didn't go well with some Bangladeshis who were looking for opportunity to assassinate him.
