When you talk about rape statistics, take a look at South Africa, Sweden, Nicaragua, Botswana, Lesotho, Swaziland, Bermuda, Suriname, Costa Rica, and Grenada. These countries literally embody rape epidemic.
U.S. is a developed country where women enjoy ample protection from state and opportunities. Women (there) feel more confident in reporting cases of sexual assault than in many countries across the world. More importantly, the American definition of "sexual assault" is not restricted to cases of rape, it refers to all forms of sexual assaults ranging from simple touch to rape in severity level. Therefore, statistics get spiked in case of the U.S.
In Pakistan alone, rape is one of the most under-reported crimes in the country. A large number of victims here, due to feelings of shame and guilt, refuse to tell the authorities. An average Pakistani doesn't have an iota of idea how bad the situation for women is in our country. So instead of fixing the problem, people here seem to be contended with pointing how bad the situation is in US (misleading perception by the way). Hypocrisy at its finest.
