A government prosecutor says a judge has sentenced a minority Shi'ite Muslim to death for sharing blasphemous content about Islam on social media.

Shafiq Chaudhry says Judge Shabir Ahmed announced the sentence for 30-year-old Taimore Raza on Saturday in Bahawalpur, a city in eastern Punjab province. Raza was arrested last year for allegedly posted derogatory content about Sunni Muslim religious leaders and wives of the Prophet Mohammed on Facebook.

Pakistan is a predominantly Sunni Muslim country and the rivalry between Shiite and Sunni Muslims dates back to the seventh century when they had a falling out over who should be the heir to Islam’s prophet Mohammed.

Under Pakistan’s harsh blasphemy laws, anyone accused of insulting God, Islam or other religious personalities can be sentenced to death.

Thanks GOD the guy is not murdered on road by an angry mob!

Someone arrested him and used the due legal procedure. The guy has many chances to challenge the decision in higher courts. The report writer used the word "minority shia Muslim". These kind of words should be avoided. A Muslim is a Muslim unless he/she commits blasphemy.

May the sanity prevails in this country. This is the job of courts, prosecution. No one should take law in the hand.

Why aren't blasphemy cases charged against Pakistanis on PDF who continuously insult Hinduism. By Pakistani laws these people should get death penalty for insulting a religion followed by 2% of Pakistani citizens.

Death sentence is only in section 295c
and 295c says "Use of derogatory remarks, spoken, written, directly or indirectly, etc. defiles the name of Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)."

Personally i am totally against death penalty and blasphemy law heavy fine and jail sentence should be there to protect every religion not just one which there already are (298, 298A, 295 and 295A).
